Subject: Re: [PreSmiley] the results of NY Yankees visitng 8 mile

The starting pitchers had me puzzled for a second until I checked my CM and noticed I only had Wilson marked down for the 1st game and McLain for the 3rd. When HAL inserted McLain for the second game that knocked him out of the box for the 3rd but apparently he was rested enough for HAL to pick him for game 4.

I will never again complain about Al Kaline as he collected 10 hits in the series and has now batted 37 for 85 (.435) in last 21 games and has batted .348 since hitting a season low of  .229 on June 26th. Also, it looks like Norm Cash was the Yankee killer this year. He was 22 for 61 with 7 HR's and 23 rbi's vs NYA.

Billy, what do you mean by "8 mile"? I know you've used the term before but I don't know what it refers to, the stadium, the city?

Thanks for the good news.

The New York AL Yankees came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans.  The final score,, was 7 to
4.

New York AL came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits.  New York AL ended up with 11 hits
for the game while Detroit had 8.

Al Downing(7-15) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Dooley Womack was
credited with his 11th save.  Luis Tiant(8-8) suffered the loss in relief.

New York AL's manager was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in
your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got
out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead.  But, hey,
that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says,
'it's not over 'til its over.'

Johnny Podres had a strong outing and Norm Cash had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as
the Detroit Tigers staged a dramatic comeback over the New York AL Yankees by
a score of 8 to 7 at Tiger Stadium.

Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs using 3 hits.  Dick McAuliffe led off and keyed the rally when
he ripped a base-knock.  Al Kaline came next and he doubled.  Cash then was
walked intentionally to load the bases.  Joe Adcock stepped in and he drew a
walk plating a run.  Jim Northrup stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice
fly bringing in another run.  Bill Freehan continued the rally and delivered
a single giving Detroit the victory and sending the 45,658 home-town fans
home happy.  Detroit had 15 hits for the night while New York AL had 8.

Ron Kline(4-6) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. The loss was
charged to Dooley Womack(4-1) in relief.  Kline and Cash were really whooping
it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory.  As
Detroit's manager noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's
attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys
- it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Norm Cash touched them all and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the
woeful New York AL Yankees by the score of 6 to 2 at Tiger Stadium.

Detroit jumped on top to stay in the 6th inning scoring 2 runners on 4 hits.
The key offensive moment was provided by Cash who thrilled the crowd when he
smashed a two-run homer (his 29th of the season).  Detroit had 11 hits
overall, while New York AL had 7.

Luis Tiant(9-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 2

This game had all sorts of hitting, from Al Kaline's 6 for 6....to Bobby Murcer's first hit of the year.

Dick McAuliffe lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI at Tiger
Stadium as the Detroit Tigers, running on all cylinders, ripped the New York
AL Yankees by a large 16 to 4 margin.

McAuliffe made sure the Detroit fans enjoyed themselves.  He lofted a
three-run 'big-fly' (his 21st of the season) in the 2nd inning, delivered a
base-hit in the 4th inning and ripped a base-knock which scored a run in the
5th inning.  Detroit bats were hot in the 5th inning when they had 5 runs on
6 hits and the 6th inning with 4 runs on 6 hits.  Detroit had 24 hits
overall, while New York AL had 5.

The win was credited to Denny McLain(19-12) who went 8 and 2/3 innings
allowing 4 runs. Fred Talbot(4-18) took the loss.  He allowed 3 homeruns in 5
innings of work.
