JUNE 8 Dusty Baker had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Fernando Valenzuela racked up an impressive total of 14 strikeouts as the Los Angeles Dodgers topped the New York NL Mets by a score of 10 to 3 at SHEA STADIUM. Valenzuela(8-6) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Los Angeles ended up with 11 hits for the game while New York NL had 6. The losing pitcher was Pat Zachry(2-6). 'Everything felt great' Valenzuela said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.' Los Angeles promptly took the lead in their half of the first with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Luis Gomez got things going when he drew a walk. Chet Lemon stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Rick Burleson then stroked a base-hit bringing in a run. Steve Carlton then let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch. After another out, Pedro Guerrero stepped in and he delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. Los Angeles finished with 8 hits in the victory. Burt Hooton(7-4) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Carlton(5-7) ended up with the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings.
