Previous message                 Next message Message #: 15930 Message from: Alan Boodman Sent: Mar 2, 2014 Subject: Cubs @ Browns A tough series at Sportsman's Park against a solid Browns team, which featured many traits of bad, old-time Cubbie baseball: sabotage defense galore from one of the best units around, surgical splits galore for our opponent, and irritations such as not being able to get a SB jump -- not a single solitary one until there were 2 outs in the last inning of the final game -- against a team with a +5 armed catcher behind the plate, and having 3 runners erased on pickoffs in the process.      Game 1: Tiny Bonham & Paul Erickson were annoyed by one blown-x play after another, but the offense made an early 5-0 lead hold up -- after we split the next 14 runs with the Browns.  Final score: 12-7.  Chicago's 17-hit attack was led by very unlikely hero Paul Gillespie, a part-time catcher who entered today's contest with 0 home runs in over 100 AB and left with THREE.  The SLA ballpark is not the most difficult to hit a ball out of, as Gillespie clearly demonstrated.   Jim Russell also homered for the visitors and drove in 4 runs.   ==============================================================   Game 2: St.Louis stalwart Jack Kramer dodged all the bullets he needed to -- in particular 2 near-misses on split card home runs chances that would have altered the outcome -- and got the Cubs to LOB 9 as he cruised to a 5-2 win.  The only blemish on his record today was a 2-run homer by Hank Sauer on the one non-adverse split card we found in the deck.   CHN starter Ray Prim has an absolutely phenomenal card in 1945, and the rest of the league must be relieved by HAL's ceaseless abuse of it.  Prim was surgically dismembered for 5 runs in the SLA 3rd when he just couldn't get that final out, and his outing was therefore a brief one.  The Browns got not a thing more the rest of the day, but didn't need any more in this reminder that even the Cubs' talent advantage can be obliterated by a 100% to 0% split in the breaks.   ==============================================================   Game 3: CHN Claude Passeau persevered and matched zeroes with SLA All Star Nels Potter though he had to endure the aggravation of seeing his offense fart away runner after runner on 95% chances on SB attempts.  Today's contest remained scoreless until Chuck Workman drew a bases-loaded walk in the 6th after Phil Cavarretta had been intentionally passed.   A 3-run rally in the 8th, keyed by a Cavarretta 2-run double, seemed to seal things up but a critical botched x-play set the stage for a 2-run, 2-out unearned single by Vern Stephens which made the score 4-2.   Sal Maglie replaced Passeau and got that elusive final out in the 8th, then showed his teammates how to run the bases in the top of the 9th when he got our first SB jump of the series and raced all the way to third on a Joe Schultz throwing error.  Despite Maglie's successful aggression and despite having a leadoff triple in that frame, the Cubs managed 0 runs in the inning.   But that was rendered moot when Maglie retired the Browns with relative ease in the bottom of the 9th to earn his 21st save, and the Cubs had registered a hard-earned series win.  Maglie has a chance to break the Pre-Smiley CHN record for saves in a season (28) which is held by Jim Umbricht of the 1962 team, a typically luckless Cubbie squad which finished below .500.   Alan
