Subject: Senators at White Sox Week 15
Game 1 Don Buford slammed a homerun in the bottom of the 10th inning and Tommy John pitched 6 strong innings as the Chicago AL White Sox defeated the slumping Washington Senators by the score of 2 to 1 at Comiskey Park. The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Chicago AL came out on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Buford hit a bases-empty home run (his 10th of the season) off Dick Lines making Chicago AL the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Chicago AL had 7 hits overall, while Washington had 2. Hoyt Wilhelm(7-4) allowed 1 run in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Dick Lines(3-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings. Chicago AL now has a record of a division leading 84-58. Washington continued their losing ways and their record is now 53-89, worst in the division. They are 0-10 in their last ten games. Game 2 Dean Chance carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and center fielder Fred Valentine hit 2 doubles as the Washington Senators defeated the Chicago AL White Sox by a score of 3 to 1 at Comiskey Park. Chance(8-14) had a strong outing. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 4 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Chance had his no-hit bid broken up by Lee Elia who singled with nobody out in the 6th inning. Chicago AL threatened in the 9th scoring their only run, but their rally came up short when Rick Reichardt lined out with the bases loaded. Casey Cox recorded his 27th save. Gary Peters(16-5) ended up with the loss. 'We really needed this win' said Washington's manager. 'That first drink of water at the end of a drought sure does taste good!' Game 3 45,877 fans were treated to a fine game at Comiskey Park as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The impressive Chicago AL White Sox won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3. In the 7th inning Chicago AL went on top for good scoring a single run on 2 hits. Washington threatened in the 9th but Chicago AL was able to put down the rally. Joel Horlen(15-6) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Horlen got help from Bob Locker who was credited with his 13th save. Ray Culp(4-13) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 3 and 1/3 innings of work. 'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Horlen, 'I was just giving us a chance to win.' Game 4 In a good matchup it was the Chicago AL White Sox 8, the league door-mat Washington Senators 6 at Comiskey Park. Chicago AL brought 5 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they had 6 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Rick Reichardt who elicited a roar from the hometown fans when he lined a single scoring two baserunners. Hoyt Wilhelm was perfect in relief and gained credit for his 27th save. Ray Herbert(1-1) was the winner allowing 6 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Dick Bosman(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in 5 innings. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Herbert said, 'this was one of those times.' |
