Mets came into Chicago looking for a better performance than they had in Montreal
In Game 1 they staked Jerry Koosman to a 2-0 lead and he appeared to be cruising ? but the Cubs rallied with 3 in the 6th and two in the 7th and suddenly the Mets looked confused against relievers Farrell and Regan and they went down weakly 5-3. Don Kessinger led the Cubs with 4 for 4.
Game 2
It was looking bleak when Gary Gentry got tagged for 6 in the first and 2 in the second -- after 2 innings it was 8-1 Cubs and after 4, it was 11-4 Cubs. The previously inept Met offense pecked away and the bullpen held and going to then 8th it was 12-8 Cubs. Phil (The Vulture) Regan came in for the Cubs and after a walk and a single, Art Shamsky crashed a 3 run HR and suddenly it was 12-11 Cubs and the Mets were definitely back in the game. The Mets manager couldn't help but have the feeling that after all this comeback, it was going to end 12-11. After Tug McGraw set down the Cubs in the last of the 8th, Bud Harrelson led off the 9th with a single - Jerry Grote ph, and while attempting to SAC, the ball got by Hundley moving Harrellson to 2b. After Grote grounded out, Joe Foy came to the plate for what turned out to be the key play of the game -- Joe stroked a sharp single to left, Billy Williams charged the ball to make the play on Harrelson who was heading for the plate with the tying run, and the ball got by Billy for and error and the speedy Foy made it all the way around to 3b with the lead run. Boswell followed with a roller to Santo, who had to try to cut down Foy at home, but was too late, giving the Mets the lead - 13-12. The play extended the inning, and shortly a Johnny Callison single drove in two more. Hoyt Wilhelm retired the Cubs in the 9th, capping the Mets improbable 15-12 victory.
Game 3
Two tired teams struggled through a pitchers duel, and the Cubs prevailed 2-1, Jenkins beating McDowell, with Ernie Banks contributing a HR.
Game 4
The Mets needed the win for a split and sent Ace Tommy Seaver (0-1, 4.50) out against the excellent Bill Hands.
Tom had his best game of the year, and the Mets were able to get two runs in the first off Hands and capitalized on the early lead and Tom recapturing his "stuff". The Mets cruised to a 6-0 game four win, Tom Terrific getting the 4 hit shutout and lowering his ERA to 2.57.
