Some real barn burners:
Game 1 Mike Schmidt lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 7 to 3 at RIVERFRONT STADIUM.
Steve Rogers (10-3) pitched well for Montreal in their victory. He allowed 7 hits and no walks in 7 innings. Cincinnati was out-hit by Montreal , 12 hits to 8.
Mario Soto (9-4) suffered the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.
Game 2 Dan Driessen slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Montreal Expos, 4 to 3.
Cincinnati came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Ken Griffey was the sparkplug when he delivered a single. Ray Knight came next and he drew a walk. Bo Diaz dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Driessen stepped in and he belted a three-run homer (his 6th of the season) making Cincinnati victorious to the delight of the home town crowd. Both teams finished the game with 8 hits.
The win was credited to Joe Price (3-3) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs. Jeff Reardon (5-3) absorbed the loss in relief. 'What a game!,' Price said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't believe it!'
Game 3 In a good matchup it was the Montreal Expos 5, the Cincinnati Reds 3 in 12 innings at RIVERFRONT STADIUM.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings after Mike Schmidt clubbed his 21st home run off Red closer Joe Sambito. Montreal won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Joe Ferguson began the Montreal spurt when he drew a walk. Gary Carter followed and he smashed a two-run homer (his 9th of the season). Montreal had 9 hits for the game and Cincinnati had 5.
Larry Christenson (1-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Woodie Fryman gained credit for his 2nd save. Tom Hume (6-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.
Game 4 The Montreal Expos edged the Cincinnati Reds at RIVERFRONT STADIUM by the score of 2 to 1.
Montreal won the game with a run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Terry Crowley drew a walk. Ivan Dejesus was next and he laced a one-base hit. Rick Miller then laced a base-knock scoring the run. For the game Montreal out-hit Cincinnati 8 to 4.
Larry Christenson (2-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Woodie Fryman got the save, his 3rd. Milt Wilcox (3-6) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. |
