Subject: Cubs @ Reds

So you think the Cubs can't possibly blow a 21-game lead?

The losing streak has now reached 6 in a row, and 10 of the last 15; the Cubs haven't played a series this totally, completely and utterly luckless since, well, a few months ago (but that was last season).  Somebody has turned the calendar back on the Cubs, because we're suddenly playing like it's 1946, or 1947, or 1948 or every other year when we conclusively demonstrated that no amount of talent -- not even the massive amount possessed by the 1945 Cubs -- can offset unimaginably rotten luck....

Game 1: Jesse Flores lost just his second game of the season, overcome by surgical wildness, sabotage defense, and clutchless (and GIDP-prone) offense.  Final score: 4-2.  The Cubs outhit the Reds 10-6, but the precision with which we were screwed in every important situation had to be seen to be believed.  We had no idea this would be our best game of the series.

=======================================================

Game 2: More of the same, with Claude Passeau as victim this time (he not exactly a stranger to it).  Final score: 4-1.  The Cubs outhit the Reds 7-6, but the precision with which we were screwed in every important situation had to be seen to be believed.  The 13 hits in the game were obtained by 13 different batters and all 13 were singles.

=======================================================

Game 3: Today we didn't outhit the Reds (but the precision with which we were screwed in every important situation still had to be seen to be believed), so we simply out-LOBbed them 10-4 and choked up 5 unearned runs.  Yeah, they made a difference.  Final score: 7-3.

=======================================================

Game 4: Completing quite probably the unluckiest series in league history, we got back to basics (more timely GIDP and unearned runs) but at least we minimized the LOB by not getting anyone on base.  Final score: 5-0.

The most talented team in the majors ran into a buzzsaw and was outscored 20-6 (about half of those 20 coming with 2 outs in an inning), hit into 7 DP while turning 1, fielded like the Keystone Cops and managed only 4 extra-bases on hits in the series.  Thirty percent of the 21-game lead has evaporated, and we only need to blow an average of 14% per week over the next 5 weeks to throw it all away.

Piece of cake.

Alan
