Subject: Cubs @ Giants

Though still leaking oil badly and continuing to misfire on most cylinders, the Cubbie machine wobbled its way to a sweep of the Giants in a series which often featured good pitching on both sides despite the bandbox confines of the Polo Grounds....

Game 1: New York's Ralph Branca continued his nearly unhittable year and combined with 4 relievers to limit the powerful Chicago offense to just 5 hits and 6 total bases in 10 innings.  Ignoring that significant handicap, the Cubs still managed to LOB the amazing total of 11 runners, forfeiting a 2-0 lead along the way, but rebounding for a pair of runs in the 10th to win by the score of 4-2.

The decisive rally featured 4 walks and a 2-run single by Don Johnson before we LOBbed the bases loaded again.  Ray Prim got the W for the Cubs with 2 innings of hitless relief, pitching (for a rare change) up to the quality of his card.

==========================================================

Game 2: The Cubs cleverly resolved our LOB problem -- not by scoring runs but by simply failing to get any runners aboard.  Three NYN hurlers, led by All Star pitcher Van Lingle Mungo, combined on a 3-hitter today.

However, one of those hits was the 27th home run of the year and 103rd and 104th RBIs by non-All Star Chuck Workman (omitted along with a few other deserving Cubbies, because half the team had already been honored), we added 2 more runs in unearned fashion, and Hank Wyse finally pitched a good game.  Cubs win, 4-1.

Wyse's shutout was broken up by an unearned run in the bottom of the 9th, as he went the distance on a 5-hitter and walked just 1.

==========================================================

Game 3: The Chicago bats belatedly arrived, just in time to turn a close 4-2 contest into a 9-3 final.  Every CHN starter had at least 1 hit aside from pitcher Claude Passeau, who atoned for that by tossing a complete game and registering his 16th win of the season.  Jim Russell started the late fireworks by rolling the first (automatic) BPHR chance for either team as he led off the CHN 8th.

==========================================================

Game 4: It looked like the sweep would be averted when the Giants got their first automatic BPHR in very timely fashion -- with the bases loaded in the first inning; Danny Gardella was the Grand Slammer, Paul Derringer the victim.

The Cubs quickly cut the deficit to 4-3 and neither team scored again until the final frame, in which the Cubs took a break from hitting into DPs at every possible opportunity and scored 3 times via 3 singles, 3 walks and a run-scoring balk, followed by 3 LOB.  Stan Hack's single had tied the game with 1 out, and Slim Emmerich's balk on the next pitch plated the go-ahead run.

Derringer gave up nothing more in the way of runs after his one bad pitch in the first, hanging around long enough to earn a win, and Sal Maglie supplied a 1-2-3 bottom of the 9th to notch save #24.

Recently-recalled 1945 draftee Frank Colman led the offense with 3 hits & 2 RBI.  Colman was in the minors for seasoning in 1945, but this hot prospect was in the team's 1944 plans -- until the league Commissioner decided to be stingy with the 1944 roster size, which limits the Cubs to making perhaps 1 pick in the 1944 draft and mandates Colman's release after this season.
