Subject: Cubs @ White Sox

Though continuing to sputter and wheeze, the Cubs clinch the 1945 National League pennant in our home city by taking 3 of 4 from the White Sox in a low-scoring series, leaving us with nothing better to do over the last couple of weeks than seeing if our batters can ever draw a decent split card, and seeing if Phil Cavarretta can break the .400 barrier.  The odds of either one happening are slim....

Game 1: Although he gave up a couple of early runs thanks solely to sabotage defense as HAL laser-beamed in on our worst fielder, CHN starter Claude Passeau was quite sharp during most of his stint on the mound.  Meanwhile the Cubbie offense parlayed 5 hits into 3 runs in the 2nd inning before closing up shop.  Final score: 4-2.

A pair of triples were the keys to the Chicago (N.L.) attack, and Passeau chipped in a couple of hits of his own.  Cavarretta did not come to the plate in today's contest.

===================================================================

Game 2: But he did today, and collected exactly half of the Cubs hits by going 3 for 4 and raising his average to .397.  It should have been 4 for 4 but he missed the perfect day by missing a split card in the 8th; Cav may be challenging the .400 mark during this magical season, but he is still a Cub.

And so, obviously, is the rest of the offense: 8 split card chances today, all 8 were adverse outcomes (0 hits, 8 outs).  Cubs lose, 3-1.

CHA's Orval Grove was at the top of his game, permitting 0 earned runs in 6 innings and lowering his ERA to 4.66.  Paul Derringer was the Cub starter who was entitled to sue everyone but Cavarretta for lack of support.

===================================================================

Game 3: Perfect Paul Erickson (7-1, 1.25 ERA) combined with recently activated scrub Ray Starr on a 5-hit shutout while you-know-who provided most of the CHN offense again today.  He went 2 for 4 and plated 4 runners in the 6-0 whitewash of the White Sox.

You-know-who's average now stands at .398 and should be at .400 except he missed a third hit by -- what else -- the width of one thin split card in the first inning.  The endless sequence of adverse split cards for the Cubs was finally broken when catcher Al Lakeman doubled in the 7th.  CHN LOBbed 11, 7 of them in scoring position.

===================================================================

Game 4: Not a good day for those flirting with .400, as Cavarretta managed only a sac fly in 5 plate appearances and receded to a .395 average for the season.  Starting pitcher Tiny Bonham proved to be so hittable (4.1 IP, 8 hits) that he was lifted before completing the requisite 5 innings to get the win, though his team had taken a 3-2 lead in the 3rd.

And that was the final score too.  Ray Prim earned his 12th win with 2.2 scoreless relief innings and Sal Maglie (though also quite hittable) finished up with his 28th save.  The teams combined for 23 hits and just 24 bases on those hits.  Each team LOBbed 9 and hit into 2 DPs (1 GIDP, 1 LDP each).  Cavarretta's sac fly proved to be the game-winning RBI.
