Subject: Cubs @ Reds
The Cubs found the going to be somewhat rough in Cincinnati, but took just enough of a break from LOBbing everyone in the house (or GIDP-ing them) to eke out a couple of late wins and sweep the Reds.... Game 1: The exception to the rule, as the Cubs took a 7-1 lead before settling for an 8-4 win. CHN starter Jesse Flores gave up no (legitimate) hits for quite a while but was hardly at his best, eventually permitting 6 hits to go with his 8 free passes in 7.1 IP. Unleashing a barrage of doubles, Chicago had a 20-8 advantage in total bases including one by Flores which enabled him to lead the offense with 2 RBI. =========================================================================== Game 2: CHN starter Hank Wyse died during third inning surgery and reliever Ray Starr was no more than adequate, but Frank Papish's 4 scoreless innings gave the offense a chance to recover from the early 5-1 deficit -- and it did. Final score: 6-5. The Cubs never did have any trouble solving Vern Kennedy (6.1 IP, 18 baserunners) but had considerable trouble getting those runners home (13 LOB and 3 timely rally-killing DPs). Chuck Workman's pinch-double in the 7th finally tied the score, and the Cubs won it in the 9th on a Lennie Merullo double which was followed by Al Lakeman's single. Anyone paying attention to Phil Cavarretta's quest for .400 can stop now; Cav was a mundane 2 for 7 in this series and has been reduced to a mere .389 average with no reasonable chance of making it back to .400 now. =========================================================================== Game 3: Paul Derringer's only mistake today was permitting the most surgical of split cards: a HR 1, fb(B) that put 2 runs on the board for the Reds while the CHN offense was busy racking up yet another boatload of LOB (10). Bucky Walters was having a start similar to Kennedy's in game 2, as he put 14 men on base in 7.2 IP but still had a shutout going through 5+ innings. One run scored in the CHN 6th before we applied our patented bases-loaded inning-ending GIDP. But in the 7th, massive underachiever Bill Nicholson got his first good split card of the season and tripled in a pair before racing home himself on a wild pitch. Long reliever/spot starter Perfect Paul Erickson (7-1, 1.20 ERA in 75 IP) earned his 3rd save of the year with 3 innings of scoreless relief. Non-hitting catcher Mike Guerra entered today's contest with 1 hit all year, but had a 3 for 4 day and an excellent chance at 4 for 4 but found the out in a loaded column. Final score: 5-2. Alan |
