July 21

Gary Matthews homered at Fulton Co. Stadium where the blistering-hot Atlanta
Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3 to 1.

Atlanta scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2
runs utilizing 3 base hits.  Claudell Washington led off and started the
rally when he doubled.  Rafael Ramirez followed, but he was set down on
strikes.  Matthews then slapped a single.  Dale Murphy followed and he
stroked a single plating a run.  Chris Chambliss stepped into the box and
drew a walk to load the bases.  Dave McKay added to the rally and hit a deep
fly scoring the final run of the inning.  Los Angeles threatened in the 9th
but Atlanta was able to put down the rally.

Rick Mahler(8-6) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Rick Camp was credited with his 23rd save.  Alejandro Pena(4-1) absorbed the
loss in relief.  He surrendered 2 runs in 2 innings and saw his ERA increase
from 2.25 to 2.77.

With the win, Atlanta continued their winning ways; their streak now stands at
7 games and counting.
