July 21 Gary Matthews homered at Fulton Co. Stadium where the blistering-hot Atlanta Braves beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3 to 1. Atlanta scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Claudell Washington led off and started the rally when he doubled. Rafael Ramirez followed, but he was set down on strikes. Matthews then slapped a single. Dale Murphy followed and he stroked a single plating a run. Chris Chambliss stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Dave McKay added to the rally and hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning. Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but Atlanta was able to put down the rally. Rick Mahler(8-6) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Rick Camp was credited with his 23rd save. Alejandro Pena(4-1) absorbed the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs in 2 innings and saw his ERA increase from 2.25 to 2.77. With the win, Atlanta continued their winning ways; their streak now stands at 7 games and counting. With this win, Los Angeles has a division leading 61-47 record. They have been 4-6 lately. With this loss, Atlanta has a 7-3 record of late, 57-51 overall.
