AUGUST 2

Left fielder Dusty Baker lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as
the Los Angeles Dodgers outscored the San Diego Padres in 10 innings 5 to
2.

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings.  Los Angeles ended up
winning it in the 10th inning.  Steve Sax kicked off the action when he
blasted a solo shot (his 3rd of the season).  Rick Burleson stepped up next
and he delivered a one-base hit.  Mike Scioscia then laid down a sacrifice
bunt.  Baker came up and he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 10th
of the season).  Los Angeles and San Diego each finished the night with 9
hits.

Steve Howe(3-2) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Ron Reed(2-5)
absorbed the loss in relief.  He gave up 3 runs and 4 hits in 1 inning.

AUGUST 4

Fernando Valenzuela struck out 16 batters as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated
the struggling San Diego Padres 3 to 1 at San Diego
Stadium.

Valenzuela(14-9) was on top of his game.  He didn't give up much, just 5 hits
and 5 walks in 9 innings.  Neither team managed to score after the 1st
inning.

The loss was charged to John Montefusco(0-5).  Valenzuela didn't realize how
many strikeouts he was racking up.  When told he had 16 he was obviously
surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn't
think I had K'd that many.  Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""Angeles Dodgers 2 to 1 at San Diego Stadium.

Mura(13-7) escaped virtually unscathed against the Los Angeles hitters.  He
didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA
from 3.11 to 2.91.  Los Angeles had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.

Bob Welch(8-5) took the loss.  He pitched 6 innings giving up 5 hits and no
walks. 'All of my pitches were working today,' Mura said.  'I felt really
good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.'
