Subject: results of Yankees @ Senators........

sept 1

In a game for the baseball purist, Mel Stottlemyre(11-13) and Dean
Chance(8-16) squared off in a tense pitching duel, New York AL Yankees
finally emerged victorious over pitiful Washington Senators, 3 to 1.

New York AL tallied 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning.  That early run
support was enough for Stottlemyre and New York AL.  New York AL had 7 hits
for the night.

Stottlemyre was helped out by Dooley Womack who recorded his 12th save.

Third baseman Ken McMullen rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Bob Humphreys
delivered 3 and two third solid innings as the Washington Senators defeated
the New York AL Yankees by a score of 7 to 1 at D. C. Stadium.

McMullen helped send the fans home happy.  He smashed a two-run homer in the
4th inning and clubbed a three-run home run (his 18th of the season) in the
5th inning.  Humphreys was perfect in the ninth giving him his 6th save on
the season.

The win went to Barry Moore(2-4) who allowed 1 run in 5 and 1/3 innings. Sam
McDowell(7-10) was charged with the loss.  Despite losing, he struckout 15
Washington batters in 8 innings.

Wade Blasingame allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the
scoreboard for New York AL as the Washington Senators defeated the hopeless
New York AL Yankees by the score of 1 to 0 at D. C. Stadium.

Blasingame(2-4) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the New York AL
offense.  He surrendered only 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA
from 4.25 to 3.63.  Washington finished with just 5 hits in the victory.

Al Downing(7-16) absorbed the loss.  He surrendered only 1 run and 4 hits in 7
innings.

Tom Tresh had 2 base hits and scored 3 times as the New York AL Yankees
defeated the Washington Senators 7 to 6 at D. C. Stadium.

Fritz Peterson(11-10) pitched well enough to earn the win.  He went 7 innings
allowing 9 hits and 1 walk and gave up 2 homeruns.  Washington made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Peterson was helped out by Dooley Womack who recorded his 13th save.  Jim
Coates(0-1) was tagged with the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8
hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Washington's manager was in a sour mood after the game.  'Even you guys up in
the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'
