Game 1 Right fielder Rick Miller had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Bill Gullickson whiffed 10 batters at WRIGLEY FIELD as the very potent Montreal Expos, running on all cylinders, ripped the Chicago NL Cubs by a large 11 to 0 margin.
Miller had a big evening at the plate. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 5th of the season) in the 2nd inning, stroked a single in the 3rd inning, doubled which scored a run in the 5th inning and smacked a one-base hit in the 9th inning. Montreal kept the pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings.
For Gullickson (11-7) it was his 5th shutout this year. Rick Waits (1-16) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Montreal , allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
Gullickson, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, 'The important thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team? But, on the other hand, since we won it works for me!'
Game 2
Right fielder Harold Baines hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the indomitable Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 6 to 0.
Montreal went ahead for good in the 2nd inning scoring 3 runners on 1 hit. That was all Pete Redfern (8-7) needed. Both teams totaled 7 on the night.
Mike Witt (3-14) took the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 3 hits and 5 walks.
Game 3 In a lop-sided win the Chicago NL Cubs scored 5 runs in the 7th inning and ripped the Montreal Expos by a 11 to 4 count.
Doyle Alexander (5-9) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He surrendered 8 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. For the game Chicago NL out-hit Montreal 15 to 8.
Larry Christenson (4-3) took the loss in relief. He allowed 5 runs and 4 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Game 4 19,778 fans were treated to a fine game at WRIGLEY FIELD as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The very talented Montreal Expos won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.
Chicago NL lost it in the 3rd inning when Montreal did all their damage scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Ivan Dejesus began the rally when he singled. Steve Bivens then called for a steal which was successful. Vern Ruhle then laced a base-hit plating a run. Tim Raines was up next and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 5th of the season). That was all Ruhle (13-8) needed. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.
Ruhle got help from Jeff Reardon who earned his 27th save. Mike Krukow (2-22) was the loser. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 6 hits and no walks. |
