G1 Tabbed to start G1 at home in Detroit, the Tigers' Hal Newhouser was on his game . The veteran lefthander won 29 games during the regular season so this ended up being his 30th win overall. Newhouser (9 9 1 1 2 9) scattered 9 hits, but was never in real trouble. Meanwhile, Detroit built a 6-0 lead for him by the end of the 6th inning. Highlighting the home club's scoring was Vince Dimaggio who smacked 2 home runs. Both clubs had 9 hits and 2 walks, but Detroit had all 3 extra base hits while Chicago committed the game's only error. Nonetheless, the LOB totals favored the Cubs, 9-to-5. Catcher Al Lakeman led the Cubs with 2 singles and the team's lone RBI. Along with Dimaggio's 2 homers, Roy Cullenbine and Billy Meier each had 2 singles for Detroit. Final Score- Detroit 6, Chicago 1 WP- Newhouser 1-0, LP- Passeau 0-1 HR- Dimaggio 2 (2) G2 In the 2nd game in Detroit, the Tigers again got out to a big lead (6-2) after 6 innings by scoring in each of the first 4 innings. The lineup supported right-handed starter, Dizzy Trout (6 1/3 8 4 4 1 1) who pitched well until the 7th. The big blows were provided by Alan Robinson who clubbed a solo homer in the 2nd inning and Dimaggio who singled home 2 runs in the 3rd. The Cubs began their comeback in the 7th on OF Jim Russell's 2-run, 2-out single to make it 6-4. However, it looked like the Tigers were going to put the game away in the bottom of the 7th when Lee Fleming tripled home a run before scoring on Chet Laabs sac fly.
Detroit led, 8-4, after 7 innings. The Cubs would not be deterred. Both Stan Hack and Phil Cavarretta hit 8th inning back-to-back 2-out singles to bring Chicago closer, 8-6. Then, in the 9th, the Cubs loaded the bases with no outs against nominal closer Andy Karl (2 1/3 7 4 4 3 0). Karl looked like he'd slip out of it when Paul Gillespie rolled into a double play to make the score, 8-7. But, the next hitter, SS Marty Marion clubbed an RBI triple to tie the game, 8-8. PH Hank Sauer flied
out to Laabs in RF to close out the inning. Detroit's lineup stepped up to the challenge in the bottom of the 9th. Although he was not used extensively in the Series, OF Doc Cramer tripled to lead things off. One out later, Eddie Mayo singled home Cramer off of reliever Paul Erickson (1/3 2 1 1 0 0) who had come in to start the 9th inning. The Tigers would take a 2-games-to-0 series lead to the Windy City. Russell had 3 hits while Andy Pafko, Gillespie, and Marion each collected 2 hits to lead
Chicago's 15-hit attack. Detroit accumulated 13 hits, and Dimaggio and Mayo had 3 hits apiece to lead the home club. Final Score- Detroit 9, Chicago 8 WP- Karl 1-0, LP- Erickson 0-1 HR- Robinson (1), Workman (1) G3 The teams felt the cold chill in the air as they took the field for the first game at Wrigley Field. For the 3rd game in a row, Detroit rushed out to a substantial lead by the middle innings. The visitors' 3-run 6th put the Tigers up, 4-1, after 6 innings despite the Cubs finally denting the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Marty Marion tripled for the 2nd straight game prior to the shortstop
scoring on a wild pitch. Detroit's starter Al Gettel (5 3 1 1 3 3) was sharp, and after the Tigers scored on Jimmy Outlaw's RBI-single in the 7th, Chicago did not serious threaten again- despite 4 hits in the final 3 innings. The Tigers collected 9 hits and 4 walks in game 3 while Chicago had 8 hits and 2 walks. In the 5th, the Cubs' Dan Johnson lined into a triple play. That may help explain the Tigers having more LOB, 8-6. In his first WS start, Jimmy Outlaw went 3-for-4 for Detroit.
His teammates, Dimaggio and SS Joe Hoover, each added 2 hits. The only player with multiple hits for Chicago was first baseman Cavarretta who went 2-for-3 with a walk. Detroit now led the World Series, 3-0, and things looked awfully good for the visitors. Final Score- Detroit 5, Chicago 1 WP- Gettel 1-0, LP- Prim 0-1 HR- none |
