Subject: 1944 World Series- Games 4 to 6
G4 A significant momentum shift occurred in the 4th game of the series. After 3 innings, Detroit had posted another early lead, 3-0. That would be it for the Tigers' scoring due to the fine pitching of 3 Cubs' relievers who entered the game starting in the 4th inning- Derringer, Papish, and Maglie. Each pitched 2 scoreless frames.
The Cubs began a comeback in the 4th against Hal Newhouser (8 2/3 5 43 3 8). Newhouser lost his control and walked the bases full with no outs. The lefty induced Johnson to ground into a double play which scored Sauer, and the inning would've ended there except Tigers' 3B Maier committed a 2-out error on Lakeman's ground ball which allowed Workman to score a 2nd run. Chicago tied the score in the 5th when PH Ford Garrison led off with a long home run.
The game remained, 3-3, until the 9th inning. Andy Pafko led off Chicago's 9th with a single. Two outs later, Marty Marion continued his extra base success by smacking a game-winning RBI double to give Cubs' fans a lot of excitement as well as a modicum of hope to extend the series a bit further. Pafko was the only Chicago hitter with 2 safeties while Mayo and Fleming each had 2 hits for the Tigers.
Final Score- Chicago 4, Detroit 3 WP- Maglie 1-0, LP- Newhouser 1-1 HR- Garrison (1)
G5 If there ever was a game that was determined early, this game was it for the Cubs. Chicago pummeled Tigers' starter Karl (1 5 6 5 0 0), and scored eight times in the 2nd inning. Cavarretta's RBI double capped a 2-run 3rd inning, and the Cubs were on their way to a blowout win. The Tigers used 4 pitchers and Chicago scored off all 4 hurlers.
Three Cubs homered, and the home team's 14-hit attack surpassed Detroit's 9 knocks. Starting pitcher Jesse Flores (9 9 4 3 2 4) went the distance to record Chicago's 2nd victory in the series. Cavarretta and Pafko had 3 hits, and Stan Hack had 2 to lead the Cubs' lineup. Fleming and Dimaggio each collected 2 hits to lead Detroit.
Final Score- Chicago 12, Detroit 4 WP- Flores 1-0, LP- Karl 1-1 HR- Workman (2), Russell (1), Pafko (1)
G6 The series returned to Detroit, and the Cubs continued to shine by breaking a 0-0 tie in the 5th inning with 4 consecutive 1-out RBI hits (2 singles followed by 2 doubles). Chicago added a run in the 8th when Detroit couldn't turn 2 on Johnson's grounder with the bases loaded which allowed Russell to score.
Detroit finally got on the board in the bottom of the 8th when Roy Cullenbine homered. With the score 5-1 entering the 9th, the Tigers tried desperately to rally to close out the series. Hank Greenberg led off with a single and one out later, Dimaggio walked prior to PH Mike Sandlock tripling in both runners which made the score, 5-3. At that time Alan pulled starter Paul Derringer (8 1/3 7 4 4 2 4) for Sal Maglie who got Doc Cramer to ground out although it scored Sandlock and wiped the bases clean. PH Paul Richards tried to restart the rally with a single, but Maglie came up big- striking out Cullenbine to end the game and even the series, 3 games-to-3 games.
Four different Cubs had 2 hits- Hack, Cavarretta, Marion, and the starting pitcher Derringer. Greenberg had 3 hits and Cullenbine 2 safeties for the losing Tigers.
