Subject: Opening Day report from Ebbets Field

Along with death and taxes, one of the miserable certainties of life is the Pre-Smiley version of the Chicago Cubs wasting zero time in proving their eternal lucklessness right from the very beginning of a season.  From 1945-1955, the Cubs went 1-10 in road openers and were on a 6-year losing streak prior to today.

The last time CHN won a road opener without requiring an extra-inning miracle to do it was 1959, and that was *15* openers ago.  So just imagine the amazement of the fans in Brooklyn when things didn't go quite as "expected" as 1944 got underway....

=====================================================================

The easy pennant of 1945 is ancient history now, but if the Cubs get anything remotely resembling our fair share of the breaks in 1944 we will win at least 90-95 games -- a solid season, but not one that will be anywhere near another pennant (just wait and see).  Today, a pair of #4 starters (Paul Derringer, Rube Melton) faced off and neither was all that impressive, though one of the two put up some superficially nice stats.

Attempting to take advantage of Brooklyn's all-4 infield, leadoff batter Phil Cavarretta smashed an x-grounder to Frenchy B. at third base, who of course handled it easily.  As did the rest of his teammates all game long with the exception of one completely uncostly error.

Stan Hack followed with a walk and two batters later Bill Nicholson stepped up and smashed home run #1.  Unlike in 1945, Nicholson is expected to actually help the team rather than detract from it, and he got off to a fine start today.

Derringer took the hill with a 2-0 lead and 3 loaded-column dice rolls into the bottom of the first the Dodgers had the bases loaded (first-pitch single, 4-pitch free pass, HBP).  Derringer surprisingly overcame that initial nervousness and obtained a popup, strikeout and groundout to escape what appeared to be certain disaster.

Nicholson continued helping out when he launched another 2-run homer in the top of the 3rd.  Brooklyn threatened constantly in the early innings and made good on one of those threats when Paul Waner's single plated Bob Finley in the bottom of the 3rd to make the score 4-1.

Both offenses took a breather in the 4th, 5th & 6th and the Cubs then sealed it up in the 7th on a surgical split-card (!) triple by returning war veteran Dom Dallessandro which chased home a pair, and Marty Marion greeted reliever Tom Sunkel with an RBI single that completed the scoring for the day.  Final score: 7-1.

Derringer tossed a complete game, scattering 7 hits (6 singles, 1 double), walking 2 and fanning 2 though Brooklyn had plenty of chances to inflict damage.  Melton permitted just 5 hits to Chicago in 7.2 IP, but he also issued 4 free passes and -- though we did find time for 6 LOB -- was nicked for 7 runs.

The Cubbie infield turned 3 DPs to bail Derringer out, and in a clutch hitting performance that will not be equaled during the next 153 games, the Cubs scored 7 times (100% of our runs) with 2 outs in an inning.  BRN's 1 run also came with 2 outs, and that was via a '$' clutch single which otherwise would have been an out.

Alan
