Game 2: An instant replay of game 1, happily for Cubs fans. The CHN infield turned 3 more DPs, Cubs won by the identical score of 7-1. The Dodger defense did not hold up as well as it had in the opener, with starter Nate Andrews being victimized by shoddy infield play in particular. Though Brooklyn LOBbed only 3 runners today, the Cubs did an especially good job of plating runners (but not with 2 outs, as in game 1). Chicago struck again in the opening frame thanks to a walk which was followed by two costly infield blown-x's. A freak play from the x-chart handed the Dodgers a gift 'out on appeal' DP but 2 runs had already scored. Another flubbed play contributed to a 2-run 4th for the visitors and Don Johnson's double keyed a 3-run 6th which made the score 7-0 at the time. Hank Wyse went the distance for the Cubs and lost his shutout in the 8th on a Bob Finley RBI single. ================================================================== Game 3: All good things must come to an end, and they sure did today. It was the Cubs turn to hit into 3 rally-killing DPs, but we kept the score close despite being on the short end of an 11-5 count in the hit column because we helped offset that with walks. However, the Cubs returned to typical form by allowing all 4 BRN runs in one surgical frame and -- of course -- all of them came with 2 outs. Starter Paul Erickson, apparently better suited to relief, was the victim of HAL's scalpel and he took the 4-3 loss as a late comeback was insufficient. Don Black recorded Brooklyn's first win and first complete game of the season even though he permitted nearly as many baserunners (11) as a trio of unimpressive Chicago pitchers (13). ================================================================== Game 4: As in the rest of this series, this contest featured numerous baserunners but mostly just singles & walks. Ebbets Field isn't stingy with the longballs, but there was only one BPHR attempt for either team the entire series (Nicholson in game 1) and the park was tough on singles hitters too (a combined 1 for 11). The Cubs took an early lead again, but our starting pitcher (Claude Passeau today) was anything but unhittable and he allowed the Dodgers to whittle away though he never quite forfeited it entirely. The CHN manager lost patience with his starter after 3 very low probability events benefited the BRN 7-8-9 hitters in the 6th, and Bill Fleming made his Cubbie debut by somehow wriggling out of that extremely tight spot. BRN starter Bill Lee lasted 8 innings and managed to fool just about nobody during his lengthy stint (17 baserunners, 7 scored) as what was once a close game unraveled into a 10-4 CHN victory. The teams combined for 22 LOB in what could have been a much higher-scoring affair. SS Marty Marion was the standout for the Cubs today, with 3 hits (2 doubles) which raised his season average to .545.
