Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

The Cubs should be close to a 100-win team this year if talent means anything, but all we have proven so far is that pretty much any inferior team can whip us easily, especially at home.  So what were our chances for success against a team with superior talent that also (like everyone else) has infinitely more luck than the woeful Cubbies?  Not much, as it turned out....

Game 1: All series long, CHN batters were limited to finding an empty column to roll in if any were available, and that sure was the case today.  Another consistent theme was clutch hitting; one team had it, the other (guess who) did not.  Those factors combined to aid struggling SLN starter Ted Wilks, who combined with untouchable Red Munger on a 5-hitter.  Final score: 6-3.

Chicago actually had an early lead in this contest, and would have increased it but for our first of 3 runners gunned at the plate in the series (splits: 20, 20, 19).  Down 2-1 shortly thereafter, St. Louis put 4 more on the board in 3 separate innings with each rally *starting* when there were 2 outs and nobody on base.  The only surprise was that we didn't find a way to lose by just one run, as is our trademark.

===============================================================

Game 2: CHN batters' continuing propensity for surgically finding empty columns helped SLN starter Harry Brecheen significantly lower his 1944 ERA, but not quite enough as Hank Wyse also had an adequate start and we came back from another Cardinal 2-out rally to eke out a rare one-run victory.  Final score: 3-2.

Seconds after a Lou Novikoff single broke the scoreless tie in the 5th, the Cards responded with 4 straight singles after -- you guessed it -- there were 2 outs and nobody on base, turning the 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit.

But Novikoff came through a second time, plating the tying run the 7th.  In the CHN 9th, CHN reliever Hy Vandenberg helped himself by drawing a 1-out walk and came around to score the deciding run on Novikoff's third RBI of the game.  Stan Hack tried to follow Vandenberg home on the play but was gunned down.

No matter; insurance wasn't necessary.  Although Vandenberg permitted a leadoff single in the bottom of the 9th, it was the only hit he allowed during his 3 scoreless innings of work, and that performance (and his patience at the plate) earned him his first victory of the season and averted a disastrous sweep.

===============================================================

Game 3: With renewed confidence thanks to that exceedingly rare close win in game 2, the Cubs came out blazing against Clyde Shoun and his 1.39 ERA.  Shoun was battered for 7 hits and 4 runs in the 1st & 3rd frames as the visitors took a quick 4-0 lead.

Then HAL remembered who those visitors were.

Shoun hung around and worked 8 innings in all -- the last 5 of them to 100% absolute perfection as HAL had his empty-column laser beam focused on the Cubs like never before.  Therefore it was just a matter of time before we choked away that 4-run lead.  A *short* matter of time.

With -- what else? -- 2 outs and nobody on base in the SLN 3rd, a timely blown-x play opened the door, 4 runs stormed through before it could be closed, and we suddenly had an undeserved tie game.

One brief inning later, 3 more 2-out runs were added to a leadoff gopher and CHN starter Tiny Bonham's miserable outing came to an end.  The CHN bullpen inflicted no further damage to our cause, but by then it was far too late.  Final score: 8-4.

Shoun was simply masterful after the third inning, getting us to roll on his card 11 times in the 15 batters he faced while NOT ONCE permitting a roll in his hittable 5 column during that span, just empty 4's and 6's.  Now that's some amazingly precise surgery.

Alan
