Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers
The Cubs did it again -- played well below our talent level, get no breaks whatsoever (only 98% true, but retribution came swiftly after we accidentally got a couple of decent split cards; see game 3) and lost when we should have won. In other words, just another typical series for the massively underachieving team from Chicago.... Game 1: When a team makes as many errors as they get hits (the magic number was '3' today), disaster isn't far off. No sooner had we tied the game 1-1 in the 4th than an error and a triple combined with a couple other hits to give us another deficit. That was all the action for today. Final score: 4-1. The story, as it so often is, was HAL's laser-like performance with the dice, a totally one-sided affair in favor of Brooklyn starter Curt Davis. Davis faced 32 Cubbie batters and got *24* of them to roll on his card. That's OK; he isn't exactly Cy Young. Ah, but he is if you never roll in his 4 column -- and that's exactly what happened. A full 20 of those 24 batters avoided the 4 column (and 3 of those 4 failed to get hits anyway). Particularly impressive was HAL's end-of-game surgery: the last ELEVEN batters for the Cubs all rolled either an empty 5 or an empty 6 column. After the 5th inning, not a single Cub batter was permitted to roll on his own card, as HAL was taking no chances. =============================================================== Game 2: This one started lucklessly enough for the Cubs too. In the space of the first 6 CHN batters, two of them missed 1-16 splits at doubles (we'd add a third miss later), and 2 others missed 1-10 splits at home runs. We did manage to score one run and then gave it right back on -- what else? -- a surgical split card 2-out RBI. We eventually racked up a 16-11 advantage in total bases and drew 7 free passes, so of course the contest was a real nailbiter but the Cubs somehow prevailed. Final score: 4-2. 10 LOB + 3 timely rally-killing GIDPs for the Cubs ensured the closeness of the outcome. CHN starter Claude Passeau wasn't completely screwed for a change, and Hy Vandenberg closed it out with 2 perfect relief innings. BRN starter Nate Andrews went the distance, exhausting himself with a 151-pitch effort that featured 17 baserunners but only 4 scored thanks to that legendary Cubbie efficiency. =============================================================== Game 3: Things improved today: down to just 9 LOB and only 2 timely tally-killing GIDPs. Just after we LOBbed the bases loaded in the second inning, CHN starter Paul Derringer allowed 2 early runs in the usual manner (surgical 2-out split card RBI hit) but then shut the door and gave his team a chance to come back. Which they did. Chicago scratched out a run in the 4th to halve the deficit but couldn't make any further headway until a most remarkable inning happened. In the CHN 8th, the Cubs registered 5 hits but scored only twice before LOBbing the bases loaded yet again. That's hardly the remarkable part, but the fact that 4 of the hits came on split cards of 5 or less was totally unprecedented as HAL apparently wasn't paying attention for a brief moment. Vengeance came immediately and the lead was gone before even one batter could be retired in the bottom of the inning. No runs would have scored for the Dodgers at all, except for a critical blown-x play which resulted in 3 unearned runs and one more undeserved loss for the Cubs. Final score: 5-3. Jim Russell had a chance to atone for his devastating error half an inning later, therefore he naturally hit into a game-ending GIDP. Alan |
