Subject: Twins & O's split in Maryland

The hot Minnesota Twins went to Baltimore to play the powerful Orioles in a four game series. All four games were white knuckle rides won either by one run, in extra innings or in the last inning accept for the third game of the series where the Twins left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.

Game One:  Dierker v. Cuellar

Both fine pitchers had a no hitter through three innings. In the the top of the fourth, Harmon Killebrew led off with a monster shot over the left-center wall in Memorial Stadium, it was his sixth on the year. Then in the bottom of the fourth, the O's Paul Blair led off with an opposite field shot that just cleared the fence over Tony Olivia's outstretched hand. No more no hitters. Cuellar would not give up any more hits as he won the game with help from Eddie Watt who pitched the ninth for the save. The O"s got 2 runs in the bottom of the eighth of Dierker to win 3-1. Cuellar finished the game at 2-1 4.33, while Dierker is now 3-2 3.00 and looking forward to his next start against Oakland. Pinch Hitter Vada Pinson got the game winning hit - a single off of lefty reliever Joe Grzenda who had been brought in just to face the left hand batting Pinson.

Game Two:  Perry v. McNally

The Twins got off to a 6-0 lead in the fifth knocking out starter Dave McNally only to see the Birds come back and tie it in the seventh. Jim Perry eventually gave way to a series of relievers. Dean Chance came on for the Twins in the eighth and ninth innings of this extra innings game. Chance was the eventual winner. He is 1-0. Dick Hall pitched the ninth and tenth for Baltimore taking the loss in this exciting 7-6 ball game.

In the top of tenth,  Twins catcher John Roseboro led off with a Double. Ted Uhlaender tried to bunt him over to third but the O's nailed Roseboro on a fielder's choice. Uhlaendr stole second. The Twins brought in Rod Carew to pinch hit for Chance. Carew stroked a solid single down the right field line easily scoring Uhlaender with what would be the game winning run. This was reminiscent of Carew's game winning squeeze bunt in the first week of the season. Ron Perranoski pitched the bottom of the tenth for his 5th save.

Mitterwald & Renick had there first HRS for Minnesota while Brooks Robinson hit his first for Baltimore.

Game Three:  Boswell v. Palmer

Young Jim Palmer was dominating in shutting down the vaunted Twins offense as he gave up only 1 run in 6 and 2/3 innings before giving way to Pete Richert and Eddie Watt who held the Twins hitless the rest of the way. Watt got save number 4.

Boswell pitched well too giving up just 4 hits in six innings. Tom Hall came on to pitch innings seven and eight.

The Orioles scored runs in the 1st, the third, and the eighth.

The Twins loaded the bases in the seventh when Pete Richert got pinch hitter Bobby Allison to ground out ending the threat and the inning.

Game Four:

The Twins score one in the top of the second on a run scoring single by John Roseboro following a rare error by Davey Johnson that had Ted Uhlaender at second base for the Twins.  The 3-0 Jim Kaat, Bob Locker, and Ron Perranoski combined for a four hit shut out of the powerful Birds. Bob Locker loaded the bases with a double, walk and single before getting out of the critical eighth inning unscathed. O's starter Dick Selma was the hard luck loser giving up only four hits in seven innings of work. Reliever Dave Leonard held the Twins hitless in the eighth and ninth.

Overall, a great series and set of games. These teams will battle again soon.
