Subject: Cubs @ Giants

(Backup of league files included in lieu of game files for the first 2 games, which vanished when I had to restore the other league in the middle of the series and the Export folder got deleted.)

The Cubs enjoy playing in the Polo Grounds, for the sole reason that BPHRs are automatic -- no split card draw necessary.  Otherwise we'd never hit even one, but instead we got several this week.  Chicago's consistent inability to succeed on microscopic split card chances like 1-16 and 1-18 doomed us in one contest and almost cost another, as the underachievingest team anywhere continues to struggle....

Game 1: And there's this too.... series LOB: CHN - 32, NYN - 13.  The uncountable wasted opportunities weren't a factor today because CHN starter Paul Derringer tossed a 4-hit shutout in a tough ballpark to do so, lowered his ERA to 2.22 in the process -- and finally nudged his record above the .500 level (3-2).

The Cubs got one of those automatic BPHRs in the first inning (solo) and another in the 9th inning (solo) and the only action in between aside from LOB after LOB was a run which scored without a hit in the CHN 8th (walk, SB, sac bunt, sac fly).  Final score: 3-0.  Starter Bill Voiselle pitched reasonably well for the Giants, based mainly on his ability to dodge bullets.

Game 2: Tiny Bonham had his umpteenth miserable start in a row for the Cubs, but Harry Feldman was just as awful if not worse for the Giants.  A 3-run homer by Jim Russell amongst all the LOB keyed a 4-run 6th for the visitors and gave us a temporary 6-5 lead, but one of numerous easy split doubles (the kind we eternally missed) for the home team capped the devastating choke.  Final score: 7-6.

The one CHN error in this contest was highly significant, leading to a critical unearned run which ultimately determined the outcome.  The Cubs were 1 for 7 in at bats where a split card was used, and the efficient Giant offense stranded a mere 4 runners today in stark contrast to the Cubs' usual approach.

Game 3: And on it goes.  Today the Cubbies LOBbed the bases loaded not once, not twice, but thrice on the way to an astronomical 14-4 'win' in the LOB column.  As a result the game, in which the Cubs thoroughly outplayed New York by a wide margin, was merely tied 3-3 after 7 innings and it appeared that a semi-competent start by Hank Wyse would be for naught.

But we crammed 6 hits into the 8th & 9th innings and finally pulled away for a well-deserved (though quite shaky) 7-3 win.  The Cubs racked up 27 total bases and drew 7 free passes but insisted on giving ourselves every possible opportunity to lose.
