Subject: Cubs @ A's

A Cubs team which, with any luck at all, would be a very strong challenger in the N.L. ran into a much improved Philadelphia squad.  The home team was aided by one of the sharpest scalpels HAL has ever wielded in a series....

Game 1: HAL is well aware that the Cubs -- what with having the top-ranked offense in the N.L. -- possess batters with very good cards, so he took a two-pronged surgical approach in these three games.  Number 1: don't let the CHN hitters roll on their own cards; number 2: use that laser beam to find outs when they do roll there.  Step 2a: make sure the split cards come up bad almost every time.  Thanks to the Philly defense, this game got away from HAL but that "gift" was made up for later.

PHA's Russ Christopher has had a marvelous season so far and he did nothing to detract from that today, though he did take an unearned loss.  Christopher had the 4-5-6 columns working beautifully, as he and reliever Bob Chipman faced 38 batters, with only 9 AB being registered on the Chicago cards -- where they went 0 for 9.

Hank Wyse had a solid outing for the Cubs and he got all the runs (3) he needed via a pair of PHA errors, and for that reason the Cubs prevailed by the count of 3 to 2 despite the loaded dice, adverse results on 8 of 10 split cards, and 10 LOB.  Wyse also had his best day at the plate, collecting a pair of singles to raise his average to .111.

=======================================================================

Game 2: Today the fans saw a superb pitching duel between CHN's Jesse Flores (7 IP, 0 runs) and PHA's Bobo Newsom (9.1 IP, 1 run).  The contest followed the exact same surgical theme against the Chicago batters as the opener had, but this time without any helpful defensive miscues by the A's.

36 Cubs came to the plate and only 10 at bats came off our own cards -- where we improved by going 1 for 10 instead of 0 for 9!  Perhaps those cards aren't so good after all.

Speaking of bad cards, the split cards were in extremely typical form, with the Cubs going 0 for 11 through 9 innings whenever a split came up, and the game proceeded scoreless into the 10th inning.  Flores' gem of an outing had long ago been wasted when CHN catcher Frankie Hayes broke the mile-long skein of adverse splits and homered leading off the top of the 10th.

Two outs away from overcoming yet another surgical procedure, Cubbie closer Hy Vandenberg and his sub-2.0 ERA imploded in the bottom of the frame, giving the A's a pair of free passes and following those with 3 singles to nail the coffin shut.  Cubs choke again, 2-1, and slump to a damaging 6-9 in 1-run decisions.

=======================================================================

Game 3: No good deed goes unpunished for the Cubs, so just as 3 unearned runs gave us a win in the series opener, 3 unearned runs today separated defeat from victory.  Cubs lose, 5-2.

Perfect Paul Erickson (a valid nickname in prior seasons which has now become derisive) was victimized by 3 errors though he permitted just one run of the earned variety -- and even that one was hardly deserved -- in his 5 innings of work.  Erickson was in serious trouble early though he hadn't even allowed a single hit.  He escaped a walk+error jam in the first, but in the third he donated unearned run #1 on 2 free passes and his own timely error.

The Cubs had just retaken the lead in the 5th when the most underachieving defense in the majors struck again -- a blown-x by a top-quality defensive OF was no routine blown-x, it was a 4-base howler that caused 3 runs to score with one of them laughably being counted as "earned".

Ex-CHN pitcher Monk Dubiel on the mound for the A's took it the rest of the way, as the Cubs managed just 2 baserunners over the final 4 innings.  The Cubs outhit the A's 9-6, but 7 walks and 3 critical errors easily negated that minor advantage, causing us to lose the series and dealing a crushing blow to the Cubs already-microscopic N.L. pennant chances despite a team with well over 90 wins' worth of talent on the roster.
