Subject: Cubs @ Tigers

An irrelevant rematch of the 1945 World Series goes the Cubs way this time even though the #1 offense in the majors was outhit by the Tigers in all 3 games.

However, in order to stay in the 1944 pennant race longer than a few more minutes Chicago will need to play about .600 ball in home games during the second half, a clearly impossible task given the schedule and the fact that we got off to an auspicious start by falling flat on our collective faces in Wrigley Field this week....

Game 1: Two excellent pitchers (Flores, Newhouser) faced off in the opener, so naturally 8 runs were scored in the first 2 innings.  Detroit had 5 of the 8 thanks to a 4-run first, when they got 5 straight 2-out hits.  Then the pitchers finally began approaching their normal level of quality and nothing but zeroes went up on the board aside from a Bill Nicholson solo homer in the 6th which made the score 5-4.

The Cubs were down to our final out with nobody on base in the 9th when pinch hitter Paul Gillespie drew a walk.  The cement-footed third string catcher looked to the dugout for a pinch runner, but the Chicago manager had already given up on this one.  Suddenly Phil Cavarretta lined a drive into the gap for a double, and Gillespie chugged all the way around from first to tie the game before collapsing.

Defensive sub Marty Marion then delivered a bases-loaded double in the 10th, and although we'd leave the sacks full with no further scoring, Marion's 2 RBIs and Bill Fleming setting down the Tigers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning were good enough for a surprising 7-5 win.

The 7-8 hitters in the Detroit lineup (Cramer, Hoover) combined to go 7 for 8; Nicholson had 3 singles to go with his home run.  The teams were identical in total bases (17) walks (3) and errors (1), and were separated by just 1 in LOB.

======================================================================

Game 2: Eight CHN batters rolled nothing but loaded columns in the top of the first and still easily found 3 outs, but also found 5 hits which resulted in 3 runs against eminently hittable DEA starter Johnny Gorsica.  Speaking of hittable, massive underachiever Tiny Bonham was on the hill for the Cubs, pitching well below his talent level as usual (8 IP, 11 hits).

The Tigers quickly sliced their deficit to 3-1, and then 3-2 on Doc Cramer's gopher.  But the Cubbie infield turned 3 DPs and Detroit LOBbed 9 to our 5 (and only 1 timely GIDP).  A pair of doubles in the 8th plated an insurance run and Paul Erickson took care of the rest of the bottom of the 9th after Bonham exited following a leadoff single.  Final score: 4-2.

After the first inning, the Cubs offense went into total hibernation and Gorsica tossed the next 6 innings while permitting just 1 hit and no walks.  All that separated Gorsica from perfection over that span was a single by Bonham and a non-costly infield error.

======================================================================

Game 3: HAL had to be frustrated that all of the split card breaks Detroit was getting (and Chicago wasn't) still weren't resulting in wins, so he really turned the screws in this one.  With the Cubs leading 2-1 in the 5th, Detroit's Dick Wakefield came up with a BPGS (Ballpark Grand Slam) immediately after the most underachieving defense in the majors donated yet another unwarranted baserunner.

Nicholson had a chance at a homer earlier in the game and drew one of our best split cards of the year -- a 2!  But it was an out.  With the Tigers up 5-3 shortly after the BPGS, a Detroit batter (who had all of 1 HR in 300+ AB this season) came up with a man on and got the same HR 1, fb(B) 2-20 chance that Nicholson had.  Surely you guessed it: 7-3 now, and any chance of a Cubbie comeback was gone.

So that's how it ended.  Dizzy Trout got win #21 easily, while CHN starter Hank Wyse was the victim of the 2 split cards that pushed 6 runs across the plate.
