Subject: Cubs @ Red Sox
The Cubs remain on pace to be one of the 5 best non-pennant winning teams in Pre-Smiley history, but if we keep playing as incredibly luckless as we were this series, only the "non-pennant winning" part of that description remains a sure thing.... Game 1: We were cruising along in typical fashion, getting ready to lose yet another close game as we have so many times this year despite facing a mediocre (to be charitable) opposing starter, when all hell suddenly broke loose in a surgical nightmare in the Boston 6th. The close contest became an 11-2 rout, as every CHN pitcher who took the mound in this one was completely dismembered. The Cubbie offense wasn't exactly mystified by Boston's Emmett O'Neill, racking up 14 baserunners during his 7.2 IP, but we also racked up 13 LOB for the game (BOA: 5) to go with our two timely rally-killing GIDPs. Claude Passeau was the luckless loser for the visiting squad and the two relievers who followed combined for 7 baserunners and 5 runs in less than 3 innings. ===================================================================== Game 2: In the lone bright spot of the series, the bat of catcher Frankie Hayes (2 HR, 5 RBI) led the Cubs to an 8-5 win that still almost leaked away. The split card results being no different than usual this week, Boston was able to fight back consistently and their weapon of choice (now as well as in subsequent contests) was ultra-low probability triples. Chicago nearly blew leads of 3-0, 4-1 and 8-3 but somehow got the bleeding stopped just in time. Ace reliever Hy Vandenberg, whose ERA has skyrocketed as our pennant chances have evaporated (perhaps a connection there?) had another heart attack inducing outing but finally nailed down the save for erratic starter Hank Wyse (7.2 IP, 13 hits). ===================================================================== Game 3: Gold Glove shortstop Marty Marion is the glue which holds the most screwed defense in the league together (high praise indeed) but he's not one of those guys who can boringly play every inning of the season without a break. So today he got a rare day off, and that was the #1 reason (getting just 5 hits off a pair of hittable Boston pitchers was reason #2) why the Cubs took one more undeserved one-run loss. It took HAL exactly two batters to "discover" Lennie 'not-a-4' Merullo at SS in place of Marion, and the inevitable resulting blown-x wasn't limited to just one base. Or two. One pitch later Pete Fox's routine grounder -- fielded successfully by Merullo precisely one batter too late -- provided the run. Naturally, the final score of the game was 1-0. Just half an inning after Boston got an unearned runner to third base with one out, the Cubs got a one-out triple from Jim Russell. As far as anyone knows, he's still standing there. Tiny Bonham pitched very well but was the luckless loser for Chicago, and he got 2 innings of shutout relief help from Mack Stewart, a free-agent pickup from earlier this season who was making his 1944 debut. ===================================================================== Game 4: CHN's Jesse Flores pitched a 6-hitter, but 3 of those hits were low-probability triples. One of which was immediately followed by an error which plated the losing run in Boston's final at-bats of the day and made Flores today's luckless loser. Final score: 3-2; another in a long line of unearned, undeserved 1-run losses. Three low-probability triples in one game is pretty rare, but the Cubs came up with an even rarer set of events in order to choke this one away: how about FOUR timely rally-killing GIDPs? Our cooperation in that area helped Red Sox ace Tex Hughson to an easy day even though the Cubs had more baserunners than Boston. Hughson amassed 10 strikeouts, all of them seemingly with a Cub runner on third base, and he issued just 2 free passes while harmlessly scattering 7 hits. Alan |
