Subject: Cubs @ Braves
Having lost 3 of 4 to Boston's A.L. entry last week, the Cubs remained in Boston and suffered an identical disaster against the N.L. squad from that town. The Cubs now officially exit the 1944 pennant race, making it easier for some of our opponents who may have been torn between whether to try to beat the Cubs or trying to improve their own draft lottery position for 1943; they can rest assured that any home wins the Cubs happen to get during the final month are totally irrelevant now.... Game 1: When a game is decided by just one run -- i.e. by "luck" -- the Cubs (what with having no luck whatsoever) fare worse than any team in the majors, even the one that can't manage to play .300 ball. After this series our 1-run record stands at an abysmal 13-24, worst in the majors -- while playing over *.700* in all other games. It's a perfect illustration of what happens when first place talent meets last place luck. Today was our third consecutive one-run loss, with Boston's Allie Reynolds and two relievers holding the #1 offense in the majors to 4 hits (all singles) and 1 walk. Our 1-0 lead in the top of the first was erased by a clutch hit in the bottom of the first, and there was no further offensive action for the remainder of the day. Final score: 2-1, with Hank Wyse taking the tough loss and ace arsonist Hy Vandenberg providing 2 scoreless (and pointless) innings of relief work. Speedy 4e39 shortstop (yes, shortstop) Bob Elliott keyed Boston's win with not one, not two, but 3 spectacular x-play successes; he also stole his 21st base of the season and put himself in position to score the tying run by zipping from second to third on a routine flyout to center field. ============================================================================= Game 2: With the game on the line, naturally the Cubbie bullpen wasn't quite so effective today. Jess Flores' hard-earned 2-1 lead after 8 innings didn't even last until a batter was out in the bottom of the 9th; 2 singles off of Perfect Paul Erickson were followed by Erickson's own error which helpfully tied the contest. Erickson completed the choke in the 10th by allowing the opposition to bat 1.000 against him. Final score: 3-2 in 10, as the losing streak reaches 4 -- every one of them a 1-run decision. Chicago had a truckload of chances to take control, LOBbing a mere 11 runners while again being held to basically nothing but singles and walks. The only long hit today came seconds after the Cubs took a 1-0 lead when pipsqueak infielder Whitey Wietelmann picked that moment to launch his 3rd gopher of 1944. ============================================================================= Game 3: All bad things must come to an end sometime, and so the Cubs added to our .700+ record in games decided by something other than complete luck, scoring 6 times in the first 2 frames and holding on for a 7-3 win despite another LOB-a-thon by our hitters. The Cubs scored 4 times in the 2nd on just 2 hits (both singles of course), aided by 3 walks and a bunt-error. Once again we managed almost nothing but singles & walks, while 4 of Boston's 6 hits went for extra bases. Jim Russell was the offensive standout with 4 hits and 3 RBI. ============================================================================= Game 4: All bad things must resume immediately after coming to a temporary end, but this one was a rare defeat by more than a lone run. We didn't get enough singles and walks to lose by just 1 today, while 4 of Boston's 6 hits went for extra bases. Those were good for 4 early runs, which lead to a 4-1 final. Boston pitcher Jim Tobin was Superman on the mound and at the plate for the Beantowners, giving up just 1 run in 7 innings; the non-hitting hurler offset the run he permitted by tagging CHN starter Bill Fleming for a gopher, Tobin's first of the season. He also drew 2 free passes and thus ended the day with a perfect 1.000 batting average and on-base percentage and a 4.000 SLG. On a happier note, Cy the Aronsist supplied 2 more pointless scoreless innings of relief, and his ERA is now finally back under the 4.0 mark for the time being! Alan |
