Subject: Cubs @ Giants
In the most pitcher-unfriendly ballpark anywhere, the unluckiest team anywhere struggled considerably against the last place Giants, including one contest where a 14-run lead damn near wasn't enough. No other club but the Cubs could have pulled off an epic choke such as that, but we didn't quite.... Game 1: Luckless Claude Passeau was brutally dismembered, and the offensive support he received was summarized mainly by the stat LOB: CHN - 11. The Giants got a lot of runners too, and didn't LOB theirs. Final score: 11-5. NYN SS Buddy Kerr had the game of his life, with a gopher & 4 RBI. The Cubs were outhit only by the margin of 16-12 but 10 of the 12 were singles and they died on the bases. ======================================================= Game 2: Today we just missed another double-digit LOB day thanks to 3 timely rally-killing GIDPs, but when CHN starter Bill Fleming's 3-0 lead began to inevitably evaporate, the offense got back on the beam and pulled out a 12-6 win. The Chicago attack was still mostly confined to singles & walks while the Giants took full advantage of the gopher-prone Polo Grounds. The Cubs failed to avail themselves of opportunities presented by the New York defense (4 errors) by plating a grand total of 1 unearned run. The non-hitting CHN DP combo of Johnson & Merullo combined for 6 of our 16 hits. ======================================================= Game 3: The Cubs finally broke out the power sticks, homering 4 times today. MVP candidate Bill Nicholson homered twice including a Grand Slam as the visitors built a 15-1 lead in the 5th inning before letting some of the scrubs play. HAL decided to make it interesting by giving the Giants 9 baserunners (and 8 runs) in their half of the 5th, and CHN starter Jesse Flores was pronounced dead on the operating table before he could complete the frame and thus be eligible for the W. Flores was hardly aided in his effort by numerous blown-x's by the most underachieving defense in the majors. Red Lynn took over and provided 4.1 innings of generally horrible relief, but the Cubs hung on -- barely -- as the 15-1 lead became a 16-12 final. Dominic Dallessandro also homered twice for the Cubs, who amassed 33 total bases to New York's 19. ======================================================= Game 4: The Cubs blew an early 3-0 lead, out-LOBbed the Giants by a mere 10-4, but then exploded for 10 runs in the 6th inning and recorded a 14-3 win. Nicholson homered twice for the second straight day, including a Grand Slam for the second straight day, then the Giants finally decided to send him a message with a HBP in his final plate appearance. Nicholson added 12 to his RBI total over the final two games when he went berserk with the bat. It was dicey for a while, but the eventual offensive support enabled CHN starter Ed Hanyzewski to notch a complete game victory in his first major league appearance. He also drew a key walk off his own 99% empty batting card in the big inning, the 2-out free pass keeping the rally alive and 8 of the 10 runs scored after that. Alan |
