Subject: Cubs @ Braves

There never really was a pennant race in the N.L. this season at any point in time, and despite playing .600+ ball the Cubs aren't likely to even survive until the final week before being officially eliminated (having been unofficially eliminated months ago).  It should have been quite a battle, since the two top teams are equivalent in practically every way -- with one major exception.

CHN's record in one-run games (a league-worst 17-27 now) puts us 7 games behind the Cards, which accounts for the **entire** difference in the standings.  In all other games (ones where luck plays somewhat less of a factor), both of these outstanding teams are exactly 45 games over .500 and playing over .700 ball.  And it was business as usual for the Cubs in this series, though we fared much better than usual in close games by going 1-1!

Game 1: Missed opportunities were in abundance for both teams, but they were especially damaging to, of course, the Cubs.  After LOBbing the bases loaded in the 7th without scoring, Chicago managed a clutch game-tying single in the 9th (before LObbing 2 more RISP) and it looked like this might be something other than the typical close loss for the Cubs.

Alas, it was not.  From the 10th through the 13th the Cubs sent the minimum number of batters to the plate (there was 1 hit, quickly followed by a timely GIDP) and ultra-hittable Boston reliever Woody Rich picked up his first win of the season when Merullo atoned for his clutch hit by making a critical error.  Final score: Cubs lose by -- what else -- one run, 3-2 in 13 innings.

Game 2: You can tell that Perfect Paul Erickson doesn't exactly get a whole lot of support from the #1 offense in the league, as he entered this contest with an ERA below 2.0 in nearly 120 IP but sporting a mere 9-9 record.  Today wasn't much different than usual, as Erickson got neither offensive nor defensive support although he was able to persevere and prevail for that rarest of things: a Cubbie 1-run win!

Erickson had numerous chances to help himself, coming to the plate with 7 men on base (4 RISP) but going 0 for 4, thereby assisting the Cubs to a whopping 10-2 advantage in LOB for the day.

With a 2-0 lead in the BON 3rd, two consecutive blown-x plays by the most screwed defense in the league gave the Braves 2 gift runners, a wild pitch immediately cut our lead to 2-1, and Boston's first legitimate hit of the day, coming with of course 2 outs, plated the second undeserved run and the contest was suddenly tied.

But shortly thereafter 2 singles and a Marty Marion RBI double gave the visitors a 3-2 lead, and that's how the game ended.  Erickson (10-9, 1.91) went the distance on a 4-hitter (2 legitimate), permitting 2 "earned" runs, walking nobody and fanning 7.

Game 3: Hapless Bill Fleming was given another chance on the mound and appeared headed for another failure when he permitted a pair of 2-out runs in the first inning, then let the opposing pitcher deliver a 3rd run one frame later which put the Cubs in a massive hole.

Don Johnson's RBI single in the 4th began the digging-out process and Jim Russell doubled home Frankie Hayes in the 6th to make it 3-2.

Meanwhile, with Fleming long gone, relievers Mack Stewart and ace arsonist Hy Vandenberg were combining for 6 scoreless innings which enabled the comeback to unfold.  Russell's second RBI of the day tied the score in the 8th, and the Cubs won it in the 10th on Chicago's final split card chance (and first good one) of the series, when Marion smacked a 2-run homer off of Ira Hutchinson.  Final score: 5-3.

Boston pitching did quite a number on MVP candidate Bill Nicholson, holding him to 2 for 14 with 0 RBI in the three game set.
