Subject: Cubs @ Pirates

The Cubs conclude our dismal .600+ campaign with a series that thankfully featured no one-run games, but we played a little below par in games decided by more than 1 run, with only a .667 winning percentage this week....

Game 1: A real LOB-a-thon in which each side stranded 13 runners while the Cubs built a 5-0 lead before CHN starter Tiny Bonham (16-7) ran into a wall in the 8th.  But Ed Hanyzewski limited the damage to a single run and the Cubs held on for a 5-1 win.  Pittsburgh's Fritz Ostermuller did well to permit only 5 of his 15 baserunners to score, and 2 of those were unearned as a result of 4 Pirate errors.

Frank Secory, Bill Nicholson & Phil Cavarretta each racked up 3 hits for the visitors.

Game 2: Playing the Cubs can be like visiting Disney World -- the impossible happens frequently and it's a place where the most unlikely dreams can come true:

- A sub-.100 hitting catcher can smash a pair of doubles, including one on a perfectly executed hit & run from this wizard of a batsman; then, with the opponent having a 95% chance to score on a sac fly, that same catcher can come up with a run-saving plate block via a pair of fortuitous split cards which of course started with the Cubs' favorite number, 20.

- A pitcher can get picked off first on a busted play -- and successfully steal second despite a microscopic chance of doing so.

- A lightweight leadoff man, still looking for his first homer of the season, can roll a HR 1, fb(B) 2-20 -- and suddenly he's no longer looking for gopher #1.

CHN starter Luckless Claude Passeau (15-10) was the miserable recipient of most of that black magic, and his 2 inning stint just missed being his shortest of the season.  Swift baserunner Bob Muncrief took a shutout into the 9th inning before the Cubs put up 3 runs to make it look less one-sided than it truly was.  Final score: 8-3.

Game 3: Despite a whole lot of sabotage defense (what else is new?) the Pirates were apparently too busy laughing to take advantage of our miscues and generated only 1 run (unearned) of offense.  The Cubs, though limited to 6 hits for the day, were able to prevail in the 1944 road finale by the score of 4-1.

Hank Wyse started but was lifted after 2 innings in the typical bench-emptier, and Perfect Paul Erickson (11-9, 1.86) was awarded the W with 3.1 innings of zero earned run relief.  Jim Russell, who went 4 for 4 in the game 2 debacle, tacked on a 1 for 3 day with 2 RBI but remains just short of the .300 mark for the season and now stands at .297.

Reliever Bill Fleming not only recorded his 5th save with 3 scoreless innings of work, he went 1 for 1 (.273) at the plate and drove in an insurance run.

Lennie Merullo, who is really a SS but is not remotely close to the max e-rating at 1B, completed his season with 3 errors in just 24 innings at 1B for a ridiculous .889 fielding percentage there.  As was the case all year long, HAL turned good fielders into bad ones for the Cubs, and he turned adequate fielders into hilarious comedy acts.  That would be reason #2 for the Cubs' pennant-costing underachievement in 1944 if a second reason was needed; reason #1 has been well-documented.
