April 29 Charlie Lea came through with a solid 9 innings as the Montreal Expos defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 3 to 1 at Olympic Stadium. Lea(3-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the Los Angeles batters. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Los Angeles could do no damage in the 9th. Jerry Reuss(1-3) was tagged with the loss. He allowed just 3 runs and 5 hits in 8 innings. 'He came out with good stuff,' Steve Bivens said about Lea. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.' Montreal scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Al Oliver who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Montreal had a total of 10 hits for the game. Rogers(3-1) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. Bob Welch(0-3) was the loser. Montreal, who had been struggling lately, moved their record to a division leading 14-2. They are now 2-8 in their last ten games. Billy Vanson was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.' The Montreal fans didn't appreciate the big day Garvey had. He laced a one-base hit in the 6th inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning and doubled resulting in a run in the 9th inning. For the game Los Angeles out-hit Montreal 11 to 5. The victory went to Renie Martin(3-0) who went 5 innings, allowing 4 runs. Martin got relief help from Howe who gained credit for his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Bill Gullickson(2-1). 'We really needed this win' said Billy Vanson. 'That first drink of water at the end of a drought sure does taste good!'
