Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins
Despite MNA's 12 errors in the series, the Jays had the sloppier play, consisting mainly of blown leads, LOB galore, and some real nice bullpen chokes.... Game 1: Surely the Jays couldn't improve upon last week's 6-run choke, right? Starters Jim Gott and Randy Lerch both entered today's game with ERAs over 10.0, and both left the same way. Gott had tossed 5 shutout innings and was staked to a 6-0 lead. A few batters later, Gott was still at 5.0 IP, yet MNA suddenly had a 7-6 lead. Fortunately, the Twins gave back the Jays' gift. Final score: 9-7. LOB: TOA - 12, MNA - 5. Game 2: Blowing leads of 2-0 and 3-2, and amassing a solid 11-4 advantage in LOB, the Jays choked away the game when, after stranding the bases loaded in the TOA 9th, Don Aase coughed up a gopher ball to Gary Ward leading off the MNA 9th. Final score: 4-3. Game 3: Jim Clancy allowed 4 hits, no walks and no (earned) runs, as the Jays prevailed by the score of 8-2 (and 10-3 in LOB). Game 4: The Jays only blew one lead today (but still racked up 12 LOB), and it was the MNA bullpen giving up 4 late runs to tie the game 9-9. With 2 outs and nobody aboard in the MNA 10th, Dale Murray loaded the bases primarily via walks, and Gary Ward followed with the second Grand Slam allowed by TOA pitchers this series; Ward wound up with 7 RBI for the day.
