Subject: Padres win, Padres win!!!!
The Streak is over (for now) as the Pads manage to win one despite blowing a chance to win a series. Game 1. THis one was over early. 4 straight one out singles and another later single score 4 in first and that was all Claude Osteen would need. The Dodgers would add a fifth run later when Joe Niekro suffers brain cramps after surrendering a double and commits two straight balks. San Diego would hit 2 homers to get within 5-3 but that was it. Game 2: Padres jump all over Don Sutton, opening up a 6-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings. THey would still lead 6-3 going into the 9th when the strat gods spit in their faces yet again... Trying to rest an overburdened bullpen, Al Santorini takes the mound looking for a complete game. 2 singles with one out make the score 6-4 and brings in Frank Reberger. A ground out makes it 6-5 and then Reberger gets Ted Sizemore to lift a flyball to right to seemingly end the game...HOwever the X gods had a different ending in mind and Ollie (2 defense) Brown loses the ball in the lights and the Dodgers tie the game.... Dodgers would win in the 13th in almost as bizarre a fashion. 2 quick outs and it looked like a 14th inning, then Willie Davis launches a shot to cf and ends up with a triple. Tony Horton follows with a single and a 7-6 Dodger win. Jim Brewer pitched 5 innings for the win. Game 3. Padres score one in the first and Jim Merritt makes it hold up until the 8th when he gives up a 2 out homerun to Wes Parker. However, showing they could bounce back, the Pads score 2 in top of the 9th on an Ed Speizio homerun off of Jim Brewer, who must have been worn out from his 5 innings the previous game. THis time Merritt is able to finish the job and the Pads win 3-1. Pads cap a 2 week stretch with a 1-13 record. Padres have managed to crack the Mendoza line as a team. Padre pitchers are hitting .190 to the team total .205. This is better than 7 players on the team, including cleanup hitter Nate Colbert. Padre pitchers are tied for the team lead in doubles with 4. Things look up for the Pads next week when the face the Dodgers and Reds again. THe Pads have managed 4 of their 5 wins against these 2 teams... Mike |
