WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Jim Gentile robbed Tom Haller of a base hit.
One run was the difference at Candlestick Park as the Chicago AL White Sox
defeated the San Francisco Giants 4 to 3.
Chicago AL came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning scoring
2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Johnny Briggs
initiated the scoring spurt when he tripled. Rick Reichardt struck out,
unable to help the rally. Jim Gentile then cracked a two-run shot (his 1st
of the season). San Francisco threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.
Bob Locker(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Hoyt
Wilhelm got the save, his 1st. Gaylord Perry(0-1) ended up with the loss.
Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 10 batters in 7 and 2/3 innings.
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said San Francisco's manager after
the game. 'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions
every Little Leaguer hears every day.'
