Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals
The top 2 N.L. teams from 1944 (and should be again this year) met in St. Louis to open the 1943 season.... Game 1: Things started badly for the Cubs when Stan Musial had a low-probability chance at a gopher in the first inning, and of course hit it. Immediately following that was the first of countless blown x-plays, as HAL is already in midseason form, sabotage-wise, against the CHN defense. Also in midseason form is the Cubs' ability to LOB runners; we out-LOBbed the Cards 24-12 in the first two games of the series. It appeared that all of the above would cost the Cubs dearly today, and it might have if Tiny Bonham hadn't settled down to toss a 4-hitter at the powerful SLN offense while our bats finally woke up in the middle innings and built a 5-1 lead. Some unnecessary late insurance made it an 8-1 final, via a 14-4 advantage in the hit column. 75% of the St. Louis hits today went for extra bases, and they displayed more power than the Cubs the rest of the series as well. ======================================================================= Game 2: All good things must come to a quick end for the Cubs, and today all the sabotage and the LOB indeed proved to be fatal. CHN starter Hiram Bithorn was assaulted for 11 hits in less than 5 innings and the Cardinals turned hardly any of those into LOB. That was left to the Cubs, who again littered the bases with 12 LOB, but we erased an early 3-0 deficit with a 6-run 4th against SLN starter Max Lanier. A few seconds after we LOBbed the bases loaded to end that rally, Bithorn choked up 5 hits which SLN made the most of (4 runs) and we were losing again. Chicago battled back to tie the game 7-7 in the 7th before -- guess what! -- LOBbing the bases loaded one more time. Then a perfectly timed blown-x with 2 outs and no runs yet in gave the Cardinals 3 "earned" runs in the 8th and a 10-7 lead. We got the tying run to the plate in the top of the 9th, but Phil Cavarretta failed to atone for his disastrous blown-x by making the final out. St. Louis amassed 15 hits + 2 walks and 1 reached on an error, and efficiently stranded only 6 men. ======================================================================= Game 3: After a very disappointing split against a weak Pittsburgh team at home, the Cubs needed to salvage this game in order to keep our heads above water. Surprisingly, we did. The teams alternated scoring innings through the first 4 frames, with Chicago emerging with a slim 3-2 lead. The efficient Cardinals once again LOBbed practically nobody, but this time part of the reason was that the CHN infield turned 3 DPs and for a rare change committed no errors. The turning point may have been in the SLN 7th when the Cards loaded the bases with 1 out and then did a "Cubs" by hitting into a DP and not scoring at all. After Woody Williams and Babe Dahlgren opened the CHN 9th with singles off of reliever Ernie White, Peanuts Lowrey sent them home happy with his first HR of the year, offsetting the pair of gophers that Chicago starter Jess Flores had coughed up. Final score: 6-2. but it was a lot closer than that for 8 of the 9 innings. SLN shortstop Debs '4e38' Garms got off to a slow start with the bat (0 for 13) but he easily kept pace with Gold Glove wizard Marty Marion of the Cubs, with Garms spectacularly converting all but one x-play in this series, many of them at critical moments.
