Subject: 1965 looks like another catfight in the AL
The 1965 AL race looks to be another close one with 5-6 teams all having a chance to win it and all of the teams being able to compete. Here is my pre-draft outlook for your amusement. SteveD NYN/DEA Detroit This year however the Tigers are even more loaded with power (4 29+ HR hitters including E Mathews, Mack Jones, Norm Cash, and Willie Horton). The team will however suffer from the nagging injuries Al Kaline will suffer which will limit him to around 400 at-bats. The team is expected to benefit greatly from the improved infield defense of 2b Jerry Lumpe (4e8 to 3e12) and 3b Eddie Matthews (4e27 to 2e23). The Tigers got extremely lucky in the draft lottery once again and will pick 2nd and 7th in the first round and are expected to address their starting pitching needs for 1965 and beyond. Minnesota The Twins are another group of heavy hitters that are to be reckoned with. Tony Oliva, Harmon Killebrew, Jimmie Hall, Fred Whitfield, Zoilo Versalles and Bob Allison all should top 20 HR's. In addition to the power the Twins are loaded with speed and higher average hitters like Oliva, Battey, Whitfield, and Hall. Harmon Killebrew will be limited to around 400 at-bats which should mean more time at first base for Fred Whitfield. The Twins are in need of a starting pitcher to really put them in the chase and should have no problem finding a good one with the 11th pick in a strong 1965 draft. Baltimore The steady Orioles will have one of the best starting staffs in the majors this coming season (with Barber, Lopez and McNally each sporting ERA's under 3 and 2 other starters not too much higher than that) but their offense will have a big Frank Robinson-sized hole in their everyday lineup. As usual their defense and bullpen will be among the league's finest. Rumor has it the Orioles have been eyeing Tiger superstar RFer Al Kaline but that the Tigers have steadfastly refused to part with the "heart and soul" of their team. With the 12th pick in the 1965 draft the Orioles can't expect much immediate help but perhaps will find a future star for the coming years. Chicago The Chisox as usual will be built around pitching and speed with a very balanced attack. Basically all of the starting lineup has 10-20 HR power. The starting staff, which has been the mainstay for the Pale Hose in 1966-67 will however return temporarily to mere mortal (but still above average) status. The best of the lot, Joel Horlen, has an era of 2.88, while superstar Gary Peters era jumps up to 3.62. Hoyt Wilhelm will once again anchor the bullpen. Expect increased contributions from fan favorites Ron Hansen and Pete Ward who both dealt with injuries in 1966. The 1966 World Champions will be glad they picked up an extra second pick in a trade with Boston as they will pick 15th in the first round. Washington Here's the surprise team of the year. The Senators have totally revamped their starting rotation for 1965 and will have one of the top 3 starting staffs in the league. The starting lineup, long a source of frustration for Manager Bivens, can expect solid seasons from Johnny Callison, Frank Howard, Willie Smith, Ken McMullen, and .301 hitting Vic Davalillo. There could be issues for playing time in LF as both Howard and Smith are natural left fielders, so I look for Smith to spend alot of time at 1b. Rumor has it that Howard may even be on the trading block, perhaps heading west. Bench players Willie Kirkland and Jim King are expected to help the formerly anemic Nat attack. I look for the Senators to look for a new catcher and for help with their weak bullpen in the draft. The Senators do look like they will add another superstar to their squad after garnering the #4 pick in the 1965 draft. KCA The A's should be able to score runs again with Allen, Wagner, Mincher and crew but their starting pitching is in dire need of arms. Last year's mid-season additions of Dave Wickersham and Joe Sparma will help but the loss of last years starters John Odom, Jim Nash, and Lew Krausse will hurt. The bullpen which relied heavily on ace Jack Aker last year will also need help. The offseason boating accident which injured Roger Maris is also causing concern for KCA management. Unfortuately for KCA the pick they traded for Sparma and Wickersham turned out to be the #2 overall in the draft so they will have to wait until the second round and get the #18 overall to start their draft. NYA This isn't quite the year for the Yankees but I look for them to be very strong in 1964. The Yankees will feature the league's best 1-2 starting duo of Sam McDowell and Mel Stottlemyre, who are both expected to be 20 game winners. The Yankees however will struggle to score runs as Mickey Mantle will struggle with a gimpy knee and a down year from Joe Pepitone, who hit 40+ for the Bronx Bombers in 1966. On the upside the team now has what appears to be a steady lineup and I expect big things from these guys in a couple of years. The Yanks, with the #8 pick in the draft, will definitely secure a top-notch player in their quest for glory. BOA The Red Sox, who will also be able to score runs, will be hobbled by a starting staff which features Dave Moorehead (4.06 ERA) as it's ace. I look for Tony Conigliaro and Carl Yastrzemski as usual to drive the offensive engine for the Bosox. Bob Lee should shine out of the bullpen and strikeout artist Dick "Monster" Radatz should play a bigger role this year. Unfortunately for Boston there has been a shake-up in management and they will have to wait until pick #13 for help to arrive via the draft. ------ USFamily.Net - Unlimited Internet - From $8.99/mo! ------ |
