Game 1 At Dodger Stadium the Los Angeles Dodgers scored 4 runs in the 6th inning and outscored the Montreal Expos 5 to 2.
Los Angeles tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning when they had 5 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Pedro Guerrero who thrilled the crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs. Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.
Burt Hooton (2-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Dave Stewart was credited with his 1st save. Scott Sanderson (4-6) took the loss.
Los Angeles now has a record of 27-23. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, Montreal is 1-9 lately and 33-17 on the year.
Game 2 In a dramatic ending at Dodger Stadium the Los Angeles Dodgers won in their last at-bat beating the Montreal Expos by the count of 3 to 2.
Los Angeles won the game with a run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Rick Sweet drew a walk. Steve Garvey came to the plate and hit a single. Larry Bowa got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Wayne Krenchicki stepped in and he delivered a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Los Angeles and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Los Angeles out-hit Montreal for the game, 8 hits to 5.
Dave Stewart (3-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Jeff Reardon (2-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. By surrendering 2 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings his ERA jumped from 3.86 to 4.43.
The Los Angeles ballclub's record now stands at 28-23. Montreal continued their losing ways and their record is now 33-18. They are 1-9 in their last ten games.
Game 3 Jerry Reuss carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Dodger Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos by the count of 2 to 1.
Reuss (5-5) was virtually untouchable. He surrendered only 1 hit and no walks in 7 innings. The left-handed Reuss lost his no-hit bid when Rob Picciolo singled with one out in the 6th inning. Montreal threatened in the 9th but Los Angeles was able to put down the rally.
Steve Howe gained credit for his 11th save. Steve Rogers (6-5) suffered the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 7 hits and no walks.
'You have to give Montreal credit, they fought us tough to the end' Billy Vanson said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.' [2]
Game 4 The Montreal Expos came in to the game in quite a tailspin, but they were able to snap their 5 game slide and had very little trouble at Dodger Stadium downing the Los Angeles Dodgers. The score was 10 to 5.
Al Oliver was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 8th of the season) in the 3rd inning and stroked a single in the 9th inning. Montreal banged out 13 on the afternoon.
Bill Gullickson (7-2) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Bob Welch (2-5) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 5 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings.
'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully grim,' noted Steve Bivens. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together and turn things around!' |
