Subject: Cubs @ Braves

Chicago's powerful offense continued to fire blanks, scoring just 6 runs in 3 games against the last-place team in the N.L.  Getting runners on base was not the problem, but doing something other than seeing them die there was (LOB: CHN - 29, BON - 15)....

Game 1: Our daily dose of foul and bitter split cards did the trick again today, where a CHN runner was gunned at the plate while two with worse chances scored easily for our opponent.  Did that make a difference?  Final score: Braves 2, Cubs 1.

Since trying to actually score was so fraught with risk, the Cubs decided to play it safe and just leave all those runners safely where they were (LOB: 11), or erase them in other ways (timely GIDP: 2).  Hiram Bithorn took the luckless loss for the visitors.  Boston's Bill Zuber continued to lead a charmed existence, seeing just 1 of the 15 baserunners he allowed cross home plate, and lowering his era to 1.85 in the process.

===================================================================

Game 2: CHN starter Hank Wyse had a good outing, but suffered with somewhat meager support (i.e., none at all) from one of the most talented offenses in the majors, so the contest remained knotted at 0-0 through 6 innings after yet another Cubbie runner was out at home trying to score on a high percentage opportunity.

The Cubs did their part in the seventh (i.e., nothing at all) but Boston broke through with a walk, single & successful bunt to take a 1-0 lead.

The Braves apparently took pity on the hapless CHN offense, and gave what the dice & split cards prohibited us from earning on our own.  Consecutive Boston blown-x plays in the 8th donated a single and an RBI double and we headed to the top of the 9th tied at 1.

A pair of non-gift singles opened that frame, super-slumper Marty Marion delivered a sac fly and Boston's Charlie Fuchs contributed a pair of balks which tallied the final run.  Final score: 3-1.  Wyse got zilch to show for his solid performance (he even hit a double but, of course, was LOBbed), and Murry Dickson got the relief win by doing a competent job for a very rare change.

===================================================================

Game 3: After that run-scoring bacchanalia (3!), the Cubs offense returned to LOB-o-matic form today, getting 13 baserunners and LOBbing 11 of them.  But we were saved by another pitching masterpiece, this time by the unlikely Ed Hanyzewski.

The pitcher whose name sounds like a sneeze not only pitched a 3-hit shutout in his first start of the season, he also supplied a pair of hits at the plate and -- take note, you other 8 batters -- actually drove in a run.  Final score: 2-0.

The lone rally of the day took place in the 6th when Marion doubled, was singled home -- beating the split card! -- by #8 hitter Peanuts Lowrey who raced to second on the throw, and Hanyzewski's single scored Lowrey.  Boston starter Jim Tobin's 4th start of 1943 was easily his best (8 IP, 2 runs) but his record fell to 0-3 though his ERA dropped a point and a half.
