Game 1 Al Oliver collected 2 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI and Charlie Lea went 5 strong innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the San Diego Padres 7 to 0.
Montreal brought 4 runs across the plate in the top of the 3rd inning with the help of 3 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Montreal finished with 13 hits while San Diego ended up with 4.
The victory went to Lea (8-1) who went 5 innings, allowing no runs. John Montefusco (3-9) suffered the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 8 hits in 6 innings.
Game 2 Gary Carter lofted one into the 'cheap seats' at San Diego Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres 4 to 3.
Montreal erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning with 3 runs using 2 hits. Andre Dawson opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Mike Schmidt was next and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 14th of the season). Carter then smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 10th of the season). San Diego threatened in the 9th but Montreal was able to put down the rally.
Woodie Fryman (3-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Jeff Reardon earned the save, his 15th. Tim Lollar (8-3) absorbed the loss.
Mike Tomeo was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
Game 3 Catcher Gary Carter slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Bill Gullickson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at San Diego Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres 7 to 2.
Carter provided the offensive punch. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 2nd inning, delivered a solo blast (his 12th of the season) in the 6th inning and laced a base-hit bringing in a run in the 7th inning. San Diego was out-hit by Montreal , 14 hits to 3.
The winning pitcher was Gullickson (8-3) who allowed 1 run in 6 innings. The right-handed Gullickson had his no-hit bid broken up by Sixto Lezcano who tripled with one out in the 6th inning. Atlee Hammaker (4-6) took the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 and 2/3 innings of work.
Montreal continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 6 games and counting. Steve Bivens held court after the contest, 'Everything is coming up aces right now. It is important for our team to ride this wave as long as we can. Every win is important.' |
