Game 2: The split cards resumed their more mundane (yet just as relentless) style of screwing the Cubs, as CHN batters had 10 hit-or-out split card chances today and went, as you may have guessed, 0 for 10.  Despite every break in the game going one direction only, the Cubs were down by a mere 2-0 most of the day and eventually cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 7th.

In that frame we got 4 baserunners and plated 1 of them; moments later Brooklyn got 4 baserunners in an inning and plated 3 of them against one of Chicago's many comic relievers.  Final score: 5-1.

Despite recording just 5 hits all day, the Cubs persevered and managed to win the all-important LOB category by the score of 9-6.

============================================================================

Game 3: Lots more LOB today too, when we weren't busy hitting into numerous DPs.  The split cards resumed their more surgical screwing of the Cubs as well, for example:

After CHN had put 4 runners on base in the first two frames and scored exactly 0 of them, the Dodgers rallied for 3 in their half of the third.  That rally consisted mainly of a Dodger player rolling a 3B 1, fb(B) 2-20.  By now you should know exactly what split card he got.  CHN starter Ed Hanyzewski, who had not permitted a run all season up to that point, conceded to his fate and tossed a diceless wild pitch to plate the ever-so-fortunate tripler, and the Cubs had dug a 3-0 hole to try to escape from.

We dug two-thirds of the way out in the third before terminating the attack with a well-timed GIDP, then gave up a 2-out RBI to take one step back after the 2 steps forward.

Wildness on the part of BRN starter Don Black (7 IP, 17 baserunners, most of which were LOBbed or GIDPed) knotted the score at 4 in the 4th as 2 bases-loaded walks reprieved the Cubs.

After 3 GIDPs in the first five innings we finally purged them from our system and took to actually scoring some runs.  Phil Cavarretta's monstrous slump may be ending at long last; he went 3 for 3 today with 4 RBI and tripled home a run during our 4-run 6th, and raised his average to .234.  He still has about 60 points to go.

The incompetent-beyond-belief Chicago bullpen quickly gave back 2 of those runs, but the see-saw tilted back when we put 3 more on the board in the 8th and wound up avoiding the disastrous sweep with an 11-6 win.

Even with a 5-run lead in the bottom of the 9th -- does anyone still think that's safe for the Cubs? -- we burned one of Mike Naymick's few precious innings to ensure the non-choke, and Naymick struck out the side without incident.

Alan
