Game 1 In a lop-sided win the Montreal Expos ripped the Chicago NL Cubs by a 10 to 3 count.
Montreal scored 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning with the help of 5 hits. The highlight belonged to Gary Carter who silenced the stadium when he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 14th of the season). Montreal finished with 14 hits while Chicago NL ended up with 11.
The victory went to Steve Rogers (9-6) who went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs. Tommy John (5-12) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Montreal, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Game 2 First baseman Al Oliver had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field as the impressive Montreal Expos beat the pitiful Chicago NL Cubs 7 to 2.
Bill Gullickson (10-3) had a solid outing for Montreal . He went 6 innings surrendering 4 hits and 1 walk. Gullickson whiffed an impressive total of 7 Chicago NL batters. Montreal finished with 13 hits while Chicago NL ended up with 8.
Gullickson got relief help from Vern Ruhle who gained credit for his 1st save. Mike Witt (5-7) ended up with the loss. He pitched 5 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk.
Game 3 Shortstop Todd Cruz touched them all as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos in 12 innings 4 to 3.
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Chicago NL won the hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Jody Davis drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Sandberg was safe on a stolen base. Dan Meyer followed, but he was set down on strikes. Bill Buckner followed and he stroked a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Chicago NL and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Chicago NL had 12 hits for the night while Montreal had 9.
Tippy Martinez (2-2) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Jeff Reardon (2-3) ended up with the loss in relief. Chicago NL now has a record of 24-49. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 6-4 lately, 51-25 overall.
Game 4 Gary Carter smashed 2 homeruns as the very talented Montreal Expos beat the dreadful Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 7 to 3.
Carter really lit it up for Montreal . The Chicago NL fans let him have it for what he did to their boys. He blasted a two-run home run in the 4th inning and cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 16th of the season) in the 5th inning. Montreal finished with 9 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Scott Sanderson (8-6) who went 5 innings allowing 2 runs. The loss was charged to Randy Martz (2-7). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings. |
