Subject: Cubs @ Senators
Despite its massive amount of talent the unluckiest team in the universe has, unlike other N.L. contenders, neither the ability to win profusely on the road nor the ability to win an astronomical percentage of close contests. Here is this week's evidence.... Game 1: Starters Claude Passeau & Dutch Leonard both left today's contest having allowed a combined total of zero runs, and the bullpens (even the Cubs' bullpen!) kept putting up goose eggs for a while. Finally in the bottom of the 10th, with of course 2 outs, a Washington runner found himself on third base without the team having collected a hit in the inning. Then they got the hit. Cubs lose 1-run game #10, 1-0, and in the process do what we so often do: LOB 80% more runners than our fortunate opponent, while also finding a way to hit into THREE timely rally-killing DPs to their zero. ================================================================ Game 2: While the Cubs were doing routine (for us) things like finding the out while having a slender 1-19 split card chance at a hit, a well-timed super-surgical split in favor of the home team produced a pair of runs and we helpfully added another unearned run with a 2-out throwing error one frame later. Stan Hack, who was "robbed" of the 1-19 hit earlier, then got our one good split card of the month and cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 6th before LOBbing the sacks full later that inning. Cubs lose 1-run game #11, 3-2, and in the process do what we so often do: LOB 80% more runners than our fortunate opponent, though today we limited the timely rally-killing DPs to a mere 1 instead of 3 but atoned for that oversight by donating the fatal unearned run. ================================================================ Game 3: The Cubs almost managed a rarity today -- a 1-run win -- but didn't quite make it. We choked away a 5-0 lead in the late innings and settled for a 5-3 win instead of 5-4 or (far more likely) a loss. Starters Tiny Bonham and Stubby Overmire permitted just 1 run in 12 combined IP before the Cubs "exploded" for 3 consecutive singles in the 7th and parlayed those into 4 runs and 3 LOB. The CHN bullpen was feeling charitable as always, and not only quickly gave back 3 of those 4 runs but loaded the bases for the Senators -- entirely via free passes -- with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. That enabled us to witness a real rarity: our opponent narrowly missing a split card chance at a win and actually LOBbing more runners than we did (11 to 10)! Alan |
