Subject: Re: [SmileyList] Trade reasons
I will give my .02 and please keep in mind that it's just my opinion and I feel it makes for a more interesting league if matters like these can be discussed without too much rancor. As far as the Burroughs trade goes I don't think it matters one whit what the real-life trade is. The reason it even comes into play is because the Dick Allen Rule makes it advantageous for teams to involve the same players if possible. Personally I wouldn't have traded Burroughs for Devine because I would rather suffer the minor loss (not having Devine next year) for the major benefit for the league of having Burroughs available next year in the draft and the small possibility that I could get him back then (or Gary Matthews, whichever guy ATN chose not to claim). I'm not claiming any moral high ground here, I'm sure if I was the ATN manager I would have taken the deal without reservation. I just wouldn't have had the "seeds" to propose it. Since you brought it up I feel obligated to opine on the Robinson/Pappas trade in PreSMILEY... My understanding is that you offered Pappas straight up for Robinson. I remember my brother asking me about it and I suggested that since Robinson (a twelve year player, 1956-1967at the time, and a 8 time all-star) was obviously a bit better than Pappas (1958-1967 2-time all-star) that maybe he could get a little more for Robby. When he suggested Pappas AND Jim McGlothlin (1967 one-year wonder) you responded by offering Pappas OR McGlothlin. His offer was reasonable and yours was not. So please let's not try to perpetuate the idea any longer that he "balked" at a reasonable offer. Anyway, I checked out the history of the real-life trade and from what I pieced together it was very interesting. Days before the trade the Orioles sent Jackie Brandt to PHN for Jack Baldschun ( a nice reliever who probably will go in the 3rd round of the 1965 pre SMILEY draft) and sent Norm Siebern to California for Dick Simpson. They then sent Pappas, Simpson, and Baldschun to the Reds for Robinson. It most definitely was not Pappas for Robinson straight up. What's done is done however and Baltimore's and Cincy's loss is the league's gain. Robinson and Pappas will go in the top 4 and it made the draft probably as strong as any we'll see in PreSMILEY. Now Larry, as far as Texas goes I would think that they are in a wonderful position to benefit from claims and the DAR.There were alot of "name" players passing through Texas in the late 70s for sure. Zisk, Oliver, C Washington, Bonds, Staub, Horton, Matlack, Alexander, Ellis, and Medich to name a few off-hand. You can't convince me with your "woe is me" statement. Although we disagree on most things I do consider you to be a very savvy GM in both leagues, except for the previously discussed mis-step on the Robinson deal. I will admit though that without the trading of draft picks (!) and the with the ability to "claim" it does change the trading landscape quite a bit so I may be a little out of step with SMILEY which is why I posted the "opinion" disclaimer to start this message. Regards, Steve SMILEY Cardinals Pre-SMILEY Tigers and Mets ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2004 6:07 PM Subject: [SmileyList] Trade reasons
The Rangers lose Burroughs (who has stunk for us so far in Smiley) at the end of 1976. In 77 he goes to the Braves. The actual ML trade on December 9, 1976 was Burroughs for Ken Henderson, Dave May, Carl Morton, Roger Moret, and Adrian Devine. In 1977 Texas had their best record in history 94-68. We won't have another chance to contend until 1996 when the Rangers were 92-70 in real life. So with the Smiley Braves only owning Devine and Morton and Morton retiring after the 1976 season, this was the best we could do. In PreSmiley I tried to make the Pappas for Frank Robinson deal, but the other owner balked and now we can stuff both of those guys, you know where. Devine will give us 106 useful innings next year and Burroughs goes to the other league. When you have a poor franchise like this one, you aim for certain years when you can take a shot. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
