Game 1 Al Oliver hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at Candlestick Park where the Montreal Expos beat the struggling San Francisco Giants 8 to 1.
Larry Christenson (9-6) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 4 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings. Montreal finished with 14 hits while San Francisco ended up with 9.
Vern Ruhle earned his 2nd save. Bob Knepper (5-10) ended up with the loss. He allowed Montreal 7 runs in 5 innings of work.
Game 2 Manny Trillo had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Candlestick Park as the Montreal Expos beat the slumping San Francisco Giants by the count of 9 to 5.
Montreal took the lead for good in the 7th inning scoring 2 runners on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Tim Raines who silenced the crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 5th of the season). Montreal had 10 hits for the night while San Francisco had 6.
Scott Sanderson (11-6) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Gary Lavelle (2-7) took the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 1 hit in 1/3 of an inning.
Game 3 Charlie Lea pitched 5 strong innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the slumping San Francisco Giants 7 to 5.
Montreal erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits. After two were out Larry Milbourne initiated the scoring spurt when he laced a one-base hit. Mark Belanger stepped up next and he doubled, and an error was also committed, bringing in two baserunners. San Francisco proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.
Jeff Reardon (4-3) allowed 4 runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Alan Fowlkes (0-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.
Montreal won for the 6th straight time.
Game 4 One run was the difference at Candlestick Park as the San Francisco Giants halted a 8 game slide and defeated the Montreal Expos in 11 innings 2 to 1.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. San Francisco won the hard fought contest in the 11th inning. Joe Morgan stroked a single. Tom O'Malley next to the plate and he lined a base-hit. Milt May then laced a base-knock to load the bases. Chili Davis was up next and he stroked a one-base hit giving San Francisco the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. San Francisco had 10 hits for the game and Montreal had 7.
Al Holland (3-4) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Mike Proly (1-1) absorbed the loss in relief. When questioned, Bob Mittleman remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt this good - heck, it's been a while since we had a win period!' |
