July 16 Bob Welch whiffed 11 batters at Olympic Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Montreal Expos by the count of 5 to 2. Los Angeles erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Terry Puhl who deflated the crowd as he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Montreal was out-hit by Los Angeles, 9 hits to 6. Welch(9-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 2 runs. Steve Howe was credited with his 20th save. Jeff Reardon(4-4) was the loser in relief. After the game, it took a long while before Steve Bivens emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the Los Angeles locker room.'
