Subject: Cubs @ Reds
The Chicago LOB Machine was in high gear even with timely GIDP and runners gunned down on the bases galore, in what could easily have been a series sweep (or a series swept), but wasn't either of those things.... Game 1: CHN starter Tiny Bonham was victimized by some super-surgical split cards in Cincinnati's 4-run 3rd inning, but although he was quite hittable Bonham permitted no further scoring. A Lonny Frey error helped us halve the deficit in the 5th then the Cubbie bats fell silent again. Until Stan Hack & Babe Dahlgren opened the CHN 9th with singles, but a pair of forceouts at second base, despite cutting the CIN lead to 4-3, reduced the Cubs to their final out. Fortunately one of our few clutch hitters (scrub shortstop Lennie Merullo) was next at the plate and he came through with a game-tying triple before becoming another LOB statistic and the contest proceeded to extra innings. The Reds had a chance to win it in the 11th but Chuck Workman got greedy and was caught stealing third with 0 outs after successfully swiping second base. Thus inspired, the Cubs sent 12 men to the plate in the top of the 12th and scored 8 times -- 6 of them unearned thanks to Cincy's 3rd error of the day which came with 2 outs and 2 runs already in. Paul Derringer (1 IP, 8 hits) was the abused reliever. Those 2 earned runs would not have been sufficient as it turned out, because the Cubs generously responded with a timely error in the Reds' behalf, and 3 runs scored in the bottom of the inning to make it a 12-7 final. ============================================================================= Game 2: It takes a lot of baserunners -- and a lot of typical rotten Cubbie luck -- to reach double figures in LOB while still managing to hit into *FOUR* timely rally-killing DPs. But that's exactly what we did today and the result was a costly 3-1 defeat. The second batter of the day for the Cubs came around to score, but every other CHN baserunner was either abandoned or erased. Moments after we LOBbed 'em loaded in the 5th, the Reds tied the game on a triple-single combo (the critical RBI coming off the bat of the light-hitting pitcher) and took the lead for good when ex-Cub Ival Goodman doubled and later scored in the 6th. CIN starter Elmer Riddle got the win by dodging several hundred bullets while Jesse Flores of the Cubs took another no-luck loss. ============================================================================= Game 3: Another early 1-0 lead for the visitors was erased immediately even though the Reds collected not one hit off of Claude Passeau until there were 2 outs in the 6th inning. Cincy tied the game in the second via a HBP, a timely error, a stolen base and an infield grounder. Dahlgren got the lead back with a solo homer in the 4th and Mickey Witek's 2-out single (after his $ clutch choke earlier in the game) plated what proved to be the game-winning run in the CHN 7th. Another timely Cubbie error donated Cincinnati's second unearned run of the day in the 8th, but the Cubs held on for the narrow 3-2 win thanks to our razor-thin 11-3 edge in hits. As always, the top offense in the majors could have done far more damage if it wasn't so busy dominating the LOB battle, this week by the margin of 30-18, as we continue to steamroll towards clinching the all-time record for LOB futility in a season.
