Subject: Yanks take 2 of 3 from the Twins at the Bronz Zoo
In a frustrating series for the Twins, the Bronx Bombers took two of three. The Twins played some of there worst baseball of the young season as uncharacteristic fielding errors and untimely Twin hitting was the norm in games one and two. Meanwhile, the very efficient Yankees got 5 runs off of 7 and 8 hits respectively in two straight games. Game One, Monday May 5th: The spring weather in New York was anything but for this night game. Just over 22,000 came out in 37 degree drizzly weather to watch the Yankees go up 5-0 in the 1st inning off of TWO Johnny Roseboro throwing errors on weak squibs in front of the plate. On the second error, he launched the ball into right field and Tony Oliva had to track it down as if Jim Fergosi had hit a potential triple down the right field line. This seemed to rattle starter Dave Boswell who then gave up three straight singles to unlikely hitters Bobby Cox, Jake Gibbs, and Mel Stottlemyre. The Yankees got only one additional hit the rest of the way. The Twins slowly came back led by Tony Oliva's 2 homeruns. Oliva now has 6 homers on the year. Steve Hamilton came on for the Yankees in the ninth to earn his first save on behalf of Mel Stottlemyre(4-4). He shut down three pinch hitters. This was Killebrew's 12th game in a row without an HR! Game Two, Tuesday May 6th: On a crisp but clear spring night with no wind, just under 38,000 came out to the Bronx Zoo to watch the Yankees defeat Minnesota 5-3. The Yankees quickly got up to a 3-1 lead after two. They were up 5-1 going into the eighth when the Twins rallied for 2 runs on three singles and a walk. With no outs, lefty reliever Joe Gibbon came on for starter Fritz Peterson (3-4). He promptly got pinch hitter Rick Renick to ground into a rally killing DP. Ken Tatum pitched the ninth for his 4th save. For the Yankees, Frank Fernandez and Joe Pepitone hit homers. Bobby Murcer added two RBI on two Sac Flies. Harmon Killebrew did end his HR drought by hitting his seventh on the season after going 12 games without one. Jim Kaat took the loss to go 3-1. Game Three, Wednesday May 7th: On a cloudy spring afternoon at the Zoo, just under 23,000 came out to see the Twins avoid the sweep with an 8-3 victory. Twins pitcher Larry Dierker pitched well accept for the 4th where he gave two HRS and three runs. While Dierker has pitched well so far, he has been alarmingly vulnerable to the gopher ball as he has given up 9 so far this year (gave up 18 total for the "real" 69 season). Rod Carew continues to play like an MVP. With Tovar on second in the top of the second, he singled home a run. In the 4th, he pushed a bunt down the first base line for an RBI as Pepitone had to go to first with the play . This time, Tovar scored from third. Later in the ninth, he added an insurance run with his 4th HR, a blast over the right center wall. Carew is now hitting .361 with 4 homers and 22 RBI. Roy White hit his first HR for the Yankees, while Joe Pepitone hit his 6th. Dierker pitched a complete game to go to 4-3 while Stan Bahnsan (3-2) took the loss. The 21-10 Twins now go home to play yet another 4 game series against the expansion Seattle Pilots. |
