New manager attached. The Expos have now officially award Jeff Reardon the nickname “Joe” as he has now become the right-handed Joe Sambito. “Joe” blew his 9th save in game 4 by allowing his 9th home run in 57 innings of relief. Way to go “Joe”!
Game 1 Harold Baines had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at San Diego Stadium where the incredible Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres by the score of 6 to 4.
In the 7th inning Montreal scored 3 runs. The key offensive moment was provided by Gary Carter who helped quiet the crowd when he laced a base-hit plating two runs. Jeff Reardon was great in relief and recorded his 25th save.
Woodie Fryman (5-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Eric Show (2-5) was given the loss in relief. His biggest problem was control as he allowed 6 walks in 2 innings.
Game 2 Mike Schmidt cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at San Diego Stadium as the very talented Montreal Expos beat the San Diego Padres 9 to 5.
Schmidt enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He delivered a solo blast in the 1st inning and bombed a two-run dinger (his 26th of the season) in the 8th inning. Offensively, Montreal was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Woodie Fryman (6-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Fryman got relief help from Jeff Reardon who gained credit for his 26th save. Tim Lollar (12-7) was charged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 8 hits and 3 walks.
Game 3 Mike Schmidt cracked 2 homeruns as the Montreal Expos defeated the San Diego Padres by the score of 4 to 2 at San Diego Stadium.
Montreal took the lead off John Montefusco in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. Despite losing, San Diego out-hit Montreal 8 to 4.
The victory went to Bill Gullickson (15-3) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Mike Proly was credited with his 4th save. Montefusco (3-13) was the loser.
Game 4 In a dramatic ending, the San Diego Padres staged a comeback win over the Montreal Expos by the count of 7 to 6.
San Diego came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Ruppert Jones led off and he banged out a single. Jones was safe at second on a stolen base. Joe Lefebvre then smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) making San Diego the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Although they lost, Montreal did out-hit San Diego 12 to 9.
Eric Show (3-5) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Jeff Reardon (4-5) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 4 runs and 4 hits in 1 inning.
'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Ray Knight noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!' |
