Game 1 The Montreal Expos toppled the Pittsburgh Pirates by a 5 to 1 score at Three Rivers Stadium.
Pittsburgh was unable to recover after Montreal went ahead in the 6th inning scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Harold Baines who quieted the home crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 15th of the season). Montreal finished with 9 hits while Pittsburgh ended up with 3.
The victory went to Charlie Lea (11-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Jeff Reardon got the save, his 28th. Jay Howell (0-1) took the loss.
Game 2 Mike Easler hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the Montreal Expos in 13 innings 8 to 7.
The score was knotted at 7 after nine innings. Pittsburgh won the game in the 13th inning. After two outs Tony Pena delivered a single. Dale Berra next to the plate and he stroked a single. Omar Moreno then delivered a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Pittsburgh provided plenty of action in the 5th inning with 5 runs on 6 hits. Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal for the game, 22 hits to 12.
The win was credited to Don Robinson (10-10) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Bryn Smith (2-2) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 4 hits in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Game 3 29,794 fans watched an exciting game at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Montreal Expos by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
Kent Tekulve (6-4) pitched well enough in relief to get the win. He surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk in 3 innings. Montreal threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.
The loss was charged to Mike Proly (1-3) in relief. Jim Tripodi was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning these tight ones! It was just our evening - no doubt about it!'
Game 4 Mike Schmidt blasted 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the dominant Montreal Expos defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Schmidt really lit it up for Montreal . The Pittsburgh fans let him have it for what he did to their boys. He stroked a base-hit resulting in a run in the 1st inning, delivered a solo blast in the 3rd inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 5th inning and belted a three-run homer (his 32nd of the season) in the 9th inning. Montreal had 10 hits for the afternoon.
Steve Rogers (15-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and allowing 1 run. Don Robinson (10-11) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.
Schmidt said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.' |
