Subject: Expos at Pirates Week 17

Game 1

The Montreal Expos toppled the Pittsburgh Pirates by a 5 to 1 score at Three

Rivers Stadium.

Pittsburgh was unable to recover after Montreal went ahead in the 6th inning

scoring 2 runners on 3 hits.  The key at-bat was by Harold Baines who quieted

the home crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 15th of the season).

Montreal finished with 9 hits while Pittsburgh ended up with 3.

The victory went to Charlie Lea (11-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Jeff

Reardon got the save, his 28th.  Jay Howell (0-1) took the loss.

Game 2

Mike Easler hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored

the Montreal Expos in 13 innings 8 to 7.

The score was knotted at 7 after nine innings.  Pittsburgh won the game in the

13th inning.  After two outs Tony Pena delivered a single.  Dale Berra next

to the plate and he stroked a single.  Omar Moreno then delivered a base-hit

resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration

by the home town fans.  Pittsburgh provided plenty of action in the 5th

inning with 5 runs on 6 hits.  Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal for the game, 22

hits to 12.

The win was credited to Don Robinson (10-10) who went 1 inning allowing no

runs. Bryn Smith (2-2) was given the loss in relief.  He allowed 1 run and 4

hits in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Game 3

29,794 fans watched an exciting game at Three Rivers Stadium.  The Pittsburgh

Pirates topped the Montreal Expos by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

Kent Tekulve (6-4) pitched well enough in relief to get the win.  He

surrendered 5 hits and 1 walk in 3 innings.  Montreal threatened in the 9th

but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.

The loss was charged to Mike Proly (1-3) in relief.  Jim Tripodi was beaming

after the game, 'Not only were we making good contact, but a lot of balls we

hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning these tight ones! It was just

our evening - no doubt about it!'

Game 4

Mike Schmidt blasted 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the dominant Montreal Expos

defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.

Schmidt really lit it up for Montreal .  The Pittsburgh fans let him have it

for what he did to their boys.  He stroked a base-hit resulting in a run in

the 1st inning, delivered a solo blast in the 3rd inning, popped a two-run

clout over the fence in the 5th inning and belted a three-run homer (his 32nd

of the season) in the 9th inning.  Montreal had 10 hits for the afternoon.

Steve Rogers (15-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and

allowing 1 run. Don Robinson (10-11) was charged with the loss.  He was

knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.

Schmidt said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate

tonight.  You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can.  A couple

pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'
