Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox and Royals

The Jays register a pair of splits, faring not-so-well when the games are close and winning the one that wasn't....

CHA Game 1: No Luck Lenny lived up to his well-deserved nickname today.  The Jays got twice as many hits as the Sox (13-6), LOBbed twice as many runners (10-5), and - in the one column that counts - allowed twice as many runs (6-3).  The tally of earned runs was too close for comfort (3-3) so the TOA defense had to save the day for Chicago, and they did.  CHA second baseman Bill Doran made his major league debut in this game.

Game 2: Dave Stieb may be turning around his season of underachievement, notching a 5-0 shutout today and allowing only 4 hits.

----------------------------------------------

KCA Game 1: This was a good series to be a lousy pitcher (see also game 2).  Jim 'Run Per Inning' Gott reduced his ERA below the 9.0 mark for the first time since April, permitting just 1 run in 6 innings.  It was left to the Blue Jay bullpen to blow the game, and with the critical assistance of a blown x-play, they did.  Final score: 2-1.

Game 2: Roger Erickson and his 7+ ERA held the Jays (with considerable help from our non-clutch hitters: LOB was 10-4) to 2 earned runs in 6 innings, but a bizarre 9th inning cost his Royals the game - although nobody outside of Cincinnati out-chokes the Jays without a major struggle, and the Royals got one.

With a 5-2 lead and 3 outs to go, the K.C. pitchers suddenly could not locate home plate by any means.  TOA batters drew 6 walks in the inning including 4 consecutive with the bases loaded.  A bases-loaded error produced another run, and the Jays were up by the score of 9-5.

So TOA reliever Don Aase swung into action, allowing hits to the first 3 batters in the bottom of the 9th, making the score 9-7 and Aase's replacement Dan Boone threw away an easy grounder with 2 outs to make it 9-8.  But George Brett miraculously popped up to end the game and avert the all-but-certain choke.

Alan
