Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers
The unluckiest team in the history of sports plays perhaps the unluckiest series in the history of sports. HAL's dismemberment of the CHN offense (not that the pitching or defense fared one iota better) was so impeccably precise that not only did we get stomped in all 4 games but he may have deprived the supremely-talented team from Chicago's North Side of its one and only potential accomplishment in this miserable season: our chance at immortality by becoming the most futile team in the 50-year history of both leagues in terms of stranding the most runners on base (relative to our fortunate opponents, and possibly the most LOB outright as well). Only in the 4th game of this series, when the eliminated Cubs chose to accept that fact and audition a bunch of .150-hitting rookies, did HAL at long last permit the CHN batters -- but only the bad ones -- to roll on their own cards. At any rate, we finally got back to business as usual in the LOB column but, sadly, it might be too late to attain that unenviable record we've put so much effort into pursuing all year. ========================================================================= Even if we don't set *that* record, there's another all-time 50-year record for futility that the Cubs still have an excellent shot at. Despite a talented bullpen featuring several relievers with cards ranging from good to excellent, the 1943 Cubs have permitted a whopping 53.6% of inherited runners to score, as our opponents get one clutch hit after another while the Cubbie batters sit and watch -- and learn nothing. The Cubs currently rank only #2 out of nearly 1,000 team-seasons in that category of bullpen suckitude, but the all-time mark is just slightly ahead (55.0%) and if any team can get to the top, the Cubs can do it!
